Mangaluru, Oct 12: Kishore, a resident of Uchila, had followed a truck transporting sand on Monday night. Later, an accident was reported between the truck and the two-wheeler at Uchila Kote.

Locals waylaid the truck and protested alleging that sand mafia had tried to kill the youth on Monday night. The situation was reportedly tense.

It may be recalled, the Mines and Geology officials had seized several tons of sand on September 18 in Uchila.

It is said that stocked sand was transported for the construction of a government building. Kishore, suspecting that sand is being transported illegally, had followed the truck. Meanwhile, losing control over the scooter, he had hit the truck.

Locals protested by waylaying the lorry as sand was transported in the midnight. Sub-inspector Pradeep and the team who arrived at the spot tried to convince the locals that sand was being transported legally.

Locals also wanted to know the reason form the police officials for the sand being transported in the night. They also demanded that officials of Mines and Geology visit the spot.

“As the sand is being transported with permission, a case cannot be registered. As labourers are working in the night, sand is being transported in night. Regarding the accident, a case has been registered at Mangaluru South traffic police station,” informed a police officer.
