Azam Khan disqualified as member of UP Assembly

Lucknow, Oct 28 (IANS): UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana has disqualified SP's Mohd Azam Khan as member of the house.

The Speaker announced the decision after receiving the orders of the court which had convicted Azam Khan in a hate speech case and awarded his three years' imprisonment on Thuirsday.

The Representation of the People Act says that anyone sentenced to imprisonment of two years or more shall be disqualified "from the date of such conviction" and remain disqualified for another six years after serving time.

The Rampur Assembly seat will now be declared vacant.

Timely disposal of the criminal charge by the Court. Congratulations. Wish other courts do the same when elected members of Assembly or Parliament are charged with crime, so that quick justice will put them out of the legislature.

Justice delayed is justice denied. In many cases, elected members of Assembly or Parliament are not processed in criminal court in time for justice to be meted out to them, and they serve regardless of their crime. Congratulations to the Court which rendered timely justice for the crime committed by Azam Khan. Wish other courts do the same in a timely manner.
