Udupi: Kasturba Hospital observes World Stroke Day by unveiling sand art

Udupi, Oct 29: World Stroke Day is observed every year on October 29 to reduce the incidence of stroke across the world. World Stroke Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the serious nature and high rates of stroke and talk about ways in which we can reduce the burden of stroke through better public awareness of the risk factors and signs of stroke.

As a part of this, Department of Neuro sciences at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal has observed in a unique way by unveiling the stroke health awareness Sand Art Sculpture at Malpe Beach. Dr Sharath K Rao, dean, KMC Manipal unveiled the Sand sculpture and said, "A stroke is when blood clot happens in the brain, which results in inoperative of that particular part. 33 percent of people die from it and another 33 percent suffer permanent disability. A balanced diet and exercise play an important role in controlling this. If you reach the hospital with in 4.5 hours after seeing the symptoms of the stroke, the chances of complete recovery are high.”

On this occasion Dr Anand Venugopal, chief operating officer, Teaching Hospital, MAHE, Manipal, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent Dr Aparna R Pai, head - department of Neurology and Dr Girish Menon R, head - department of Neuro Surgery and other staffs were present. Dr Aparna R Pai welcomed the gathering. Dr Girish Menon R gave an overview on stroke and Stroke Day and Dr Sripadma V was the master of ceremony for the programme.
