Bangalore, May 22: The HomeBased Newborn and Child Care will soon be extended to other districts in the state. The project was launched as a pilot study in parts of Gulbarga district with an aim to bring down the neonatal mortality in the state. Based on the Gadchiroli model, the HBNCC model of low cost primary neonatal care at home was mooted by the Society for Education Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), an NGO in Gadchiroli of Maharashtra.

According to Project mission director Selva Kumar, the project, initially started in Gadichiraoli in Maharashtra, has registered less number of infant mortality cases. A similar programme was started in Gulbarga and now it will soon be extended to whole state.

Soon training will begin for Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and other health workers and medical officers to take care of the child and mother at home after the delivery. Once the training programme is over, the project will soon be launched in all the districts across the state.
