Former IMF Chief Can Spend Term in France if Convicted

Paris, May 23 (IANS) France would support former International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn if he is convicted and wants to spend his term in the country, Interior Minister Claude Gueant has said.

"It seems obvious that if D.S.K., assuming he is convicted, asked to come to France, the French government would support his claim," Xinhua quoted the minister as telling local radio Europe 1 and newspaper Le Parisien in a joint interview.

Gueant was citing a transfer agreement between the US and France that allows a convict to be transferred to prisons in his or her homeland.

The former IMF chief was arrested on charges of attempted rape against a hotel maid in New York, but has been released on bail.
