Mangalore, May 25: MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, said that the Palghat division of the railways will take up construction of the railway over-bridge at Bykampady, where traffic snarls are often experienced, after the monsoon season.

He was speaking after inspecting the highway widening work between Kottara and Suratkal on Tuesday. He also instructed the officials of the highways department to ensure that artificial floods do not create problems for the people during the upcoming rainy season.

He promised the people that emergency works for allowing free flow of rain water will be taken up before the beginning of the monsoon, and that permanent works will be executed after the monsoon months.  When the officials told him that delay of fly over work near Nataraj Talkies in Suratkal was caused by problems relating to land acquisition, he promised to bring the issue to the notice of the district deputy commissioner and find a solution. He instructed the officials to take steps to extend the service road, laying of which has been stopped near Poorva Arcade in Suratkal.

On behalf of residents near Kambala in Suratkal, Pundalik Anchan said that the residents of the area had been battling artificial floods caused by the improper laying of drainage pipes of the highway, and requested the MP to save them from the monsoon woes. Kateel said that the city corporation is expected to tackle the issue of artificial floods, and also of rebuilding of the bus stand and street lights that were destroyed during highway widening operation.

Former mayors, Rajani Duganna and Ganesh Hosabettu, corporator, Sudhir Shetty Kannur, and officials of the consultant firm executing the highway work, were present.
