Mangalore: Judicial Custody of Dr Rasheed Extended

Mangalore,May 27: The judicial custody of Dr Rasheed, professor in Mysore University, who is facing charges of sexually harassing a lecturer who was pursing her PhD under his  guidance, has been extended to June 4. Dr Rasheed has been accused of sexually harassing Sujata, his junior in the department of applied botany, when working in Mangalore University. Sujata had committed suicide in 2008.

Dr Rasheed was arrested by a police team headed by Panambur assistant commissioner of police, Puttamadaiah, on Tuesday. Upon producing him in the court on Wednesday,he had been sentto judicial custody till May 26. Dr Rasheed was admitted to the district Wenlock Hospital here on the same day, as he complained of ill health.

On Thursday, Dr Rasheed moved a bail application. The judge, after listening to the arguments put forth by advocates representing the prosecution and the accused, reserved his judgment. In all likelihood, the bail application will be decided today.
