Bantwal, Jun 18: Some thieves who succeeded in stealing cash and valuables from a temple and house in Vittal, returned richer with a few lacs of rupees. This has given rise to a sense of insecurity among the villagers.

The thieves entered two main shrines of Lord Sadashiva Temple in Salethur on the night of Thursday June 16 and took away cash from the donation box and silver ornaments, estimated value of which is a few lacs of rupees. They burgled the sanctum sanctorum of the temple complex and the shrine of Lord Ganapati.

On the same night, they sneaked into the house of Kohinoor Abdul Hamid at Salethur Paltaje nearby, and stole cash amounting to Rs 3,000 and 17.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments, estimated worth of which is around three lacs of rupees.

Vittal sub-inspector of police, Rakshit A K, and other personnel visited the spot on Friday morning, as soon as the theft came to light, and began investigations. The sniffer dog led the policemen from the temple to Hamid’s house and lost way after reaching the road. Additional superintendent of police, Prabhakar, assistant superintendent of police, Dr Rohini Katoch, and Bantwal circle inspector of police, Nanjunde Gowda, also visited the place and guided investigation.
