Sullia, Jun 20:
The Lions Club, Sullia has undertaken a new project wherein uniforms were distributed to the staff of “Akshara Dasoha’ (mid-day meal) scheme.

The staff members look neat and tidy in a maroon apron and a cap covering their head. This would not have been an unusual sight at hotels but it is quite a sight to see uniformed cooks prepare mid-day meals at schools which is a good development.

‘Akshara Dasoha’ one of the dream projects of the government was tarnished after students complained of ill-health on consuming the food, poor rice quality and also finding worms in the rice. However it was later known that lack of hygiene was the main cause. Hence Lions Club in Sullia undertook the noble task of providing uniforms to the staff.

So far cooks of 17 schools have been given the aprons and caps giving them a professional look. Other schools are yet to be given uniforms, said Lions club vice-governor M B Sadashiva.

Safety Reasons

The aprons provide safety to the staff who were otherwise under the risk of catching fire since they wore nylon saris to work. Moreover with the caps covering their head, chances of hair falling into the food is eliminated, said Shashikala a Akshara Dasoha staff, Sullia.

Lions Club had also conducted a training session on ‘maintaining cleanliness’ apart from providing the uniforms.

This thoughtful step taken by the Lions Club, Sullia has been lauded by the parents of the students and also the public.
