Mangalore, Jun 20: A unique, one-of-its-kind language lab was inaugurated at St Aloysius College (Autonomous) here on Monday June 20.

Prof Narahari, registrar (evaluation) inaugurated the lab in the presence of principal of the college Fr Swebert D'Silva and vice-principal Prof A Lourdusamy.

Fr Walter Andrade blessed the occasion.

In his welcome address, Fr Swebert urged the students to make optimum use of the facility and lauded the efforts of the English department in initiating the project.

Prof Lourdusamy spoke of the facilities available in the lab and stressed on the importance of gaining command over a language, especially English, in the current globalised world.

About the Lab

The language lab is equipped with 40 terminals and is fully digitized. There are specially designed computer programmes with audio and visual aids to enhance one's reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The trainer can interact with one student at a time or simultaneously with all students.

First year degree students of the college who are not well-versed in English will be trained compulsorily. As of now, the lab focusses on English language only, but there are plans to expand and include other languages also.

Apart from training college students, the lab will conduct special need-based certificate programmes for housewives, hotel management employees and others who wish to improve their language skills, on demand.

Also, the lab will conduct training programmes to prepare candidates for competitive exams like TOEFL, GRE and others.

Mabel Rodrigues has been appointed as the language trainer for the lab.
