Food Inflation Rises to 8.31 Percent


New Delhi, Jul 14 (IANS): After two weeks of moderation, food inflation rose to 8.31 percent for the week ended July 2 as against 7.61 percent in the previous week due to a sharp jump in the prices of onions, fruits and milk, official data showed Thursday.

Food inflation had declined in the previous two weeks.

Onions became costlier by 30.72 percent year-on-year and the prices of fruits rose by 13.54 percent. Milk prices rose 12.39 percent and eggs, meat and fish became costlier by 11.95 percent.

The primary articles index rose marginally to 11.58 percent for the week under review from 11.56 percent in the previous week, according to data released by the ministry of commerce and industry.

However, the index for fuels and power, which has 14.91 percent weight in the wholesale price index, declined to 11.89 percent for the week ended July 2 from 12.67 percent in the previous week.

The following are the yearly rise and fall in prices of some main commodities that form the sub-index for food articles:

Onions: 30.72 percent

Vegetables: 2.25 percent

Fruits: 13.54 percent

Potatoes: (-) 2.56 percent

Eggs, meat, fish: 11.95 percent

Cereals: 5.40 percent

Rice: 2.43 percent

Wheat: 0.83 percent

Pulses: (-) 8.46 percent
