Bantwal, Jul 20: The local MLA inaugurated the programme by beating a traditional drum and the MP released handbill. ZP, TP, town councillor, journalists, and the general public walked on the national highway. This scene was witnessed on B C Road here on Tuesday July 19.
The taluk Working Journalists’ Association celebrated ‘Journalism Day’ in a unique way by embarking on a tollgate awareness campaign on toll collections at Netravati Bridge at Panemangalore, here, which drew the attention of the general public.
MLA Ramanat Rai inaugurated the simple programme that was held below the four-lane flyover at B C Road on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Rai said that the journalists’ have the duty of reforming society and exposing the corruption by department officials and elected representatives.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, after releasing the handbills, appreciated the journalists on their campaign on tollgate collections that has created chaos for motorists and truckers.
The walkathon from B C Road on national highway to tollgate was held by the elected representatives, journalists, truck and auto drivers / owners, as well as office-bearers of various social welfare and voluntary organizations.
TP president Shailaja Shetty, ZP president Shailaja Bhat, town councillor Dinesh Bhandary, social activist Dinesh Amin, Dakshina Kannada district working journalists’ association chief secretary Srinivas Nayak and secretary Ibrahim Adkastala, Bantwal Urban Development Authority president Govind Prabhu, Land Development Bank president Sudarshan Jain, ZP former member Tungappa Bangera, Gopal Suvarna, TP member Anand Shamboor, tourist van owners / drivers association president Abdul Razaq, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy member Sarapady Ashok Shetty, and Beary Sahitya Parishat president Abbas Ali were present on the occasion.
A memorandum was presented to National Highway department officer Ramachandra who assured to bring the issue to the notice of his superiors.
