Udupi: MAHE celebrates Dr TMA Pai's 125th birth anniversary

Udupi, Sep 30: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, proudly celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of its founder, Dr TMA Pai, by hosting the MAHE Medical Education Conclave 2023. The event, held at the esteemed Dr TMA Pai Auditorium, featured a distinguished guest, Dr Ricardo Leon Borquez, president of the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). This remarkable occasion coincided with India receiving the prestigious WFME accreditation for a decade, awarded by the National Medical Commission.

Dr Ricardo Borquez addressed the attendees, sharing his insights on 'Quality-Centric Medical Education and WFME Accreditation'. He emphasized that global standards in medical education should be principle-based rather than prescriptive-based, setting the tone for a progressive and adaptable approach to medical education.

Dr Ved Prakash Mishra, pro chancellor of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, discussed the vital role of the Association of Medical Educators of India and shed light on the future of graduate medical education in the country. Dr Russell Franco D'Souza, head and chair of Asia Pacific Bioethics, enlightened the audience on the importance of integrating bioethics into the medical curriculum, emphasizing the ethical foundation of medical practice.

Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, pro vice chancellor of Health Sciences, extended a warm welcome to all participants, setting a welcoming tone for the event. Lt Gen Dr M D Venkatesh, vice chancellor of MAHE, provided an overview of MAHE's comprehensive efforts and initiatives in the field of medical education.

International faculty members engaged in productive interactions with both students and faculty, fostering a cross-cultural exchange of knowledge and ideas. This interactive session was moderated by Dr Unnikrishnan B, dean of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.

The half-day event was graced by the presence of deans, faculty members, and medical education units from constituent medical colleges of MAHE, Manipal, as well as colleges from Mangalore.

The MAHE Medical Education Conclave 2023 showcased MAHE's commitment to advancing medical education and maintaining the highest global standards. It was a tribute to the visionary Dr TMA Pai and a testament to MAHE's continued dedication to excellence in medical education.
