Udupi, Oct 2: MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that everyone should imbibe the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi in their life.

Suvarna was speaking on occasion of Gandhi Jayanti at Ajjarkad Park programme. He further said, “Mahatma Gandhi visited Ajjarkad during the freedom struggle and organised a programme. That is why the statue of Mahatma Gandhi had been installed in Bhujanga Park.

“Several cleaning programmes are organised throughout the country on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Udupi city is renowned for its cleanliness. The contribution of civic workers in this regard is appreciable,” he said.

DC Vidya Kumari said, “Mahatma sacrificed his life for India's freedom. He also gave importance to cleanliness. Public should see to it that the garbage generated in their house is cleaned first so that we can keep the environment clean. People should segregate dry and wet wastes and give the same to the civic workers. This is the responsibility of every citizen.”

Certificates and prizes were distributed to students who won Bapuji essay competition that was organised by News and public relations department.

Free hand bags were distributed to the public by city municipality and Bank of Baroda. Additional DC Mamata Devi, deputy director of public education department Ganapati, district news officer Manjunath, city municipality commissioner Rayappa, city municipality members Balakrishna, Rashmi, Jayanti and others were present.
