Mother-daughter electrocuted in Bengaluru; five Bescom officers arrested, released

Bengaluru, Nov 20 (IANS): Five officers of the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), who were arrested after a woman and her infant died when they stepped on a livewire here, were released on station bail, according to sources on Monday.

Soundarya, 23, and her nine month old baby, Suvikasha, were burnt alive after stepping on a snapped electric wire while walking on the footpath on Sunday near Hope Farm Junction on Whitefield Main Road, located 100 meters from the Bescom office.

The public expressed outrage over the incident and demanded stringent action against the negligent Bescom officers. Authorities had initially taken the officers into custody and claimed that they were arrested.

Bescom executive engineer Sriram, assistant executive engineer Subramanya, assistant engineer Chetan, joint engineer Rajanna, and station operator Manjunath were arrested by the Kadugodi police over negligence resulting in the death of the mother and baby.

It was alleged that even an hour after the tragedy, the authorities had not arrived at the scene. It is also alleged that the wire had snapped on the pavement on Saturday night.

Soundarya was returning home in Bengaluru with her 9-month-old daughter and husband Santhosh Kumar after celebrating Diwali in Tamil Nadu

She stepped on the snapped 11 kV electric wire on the pavement, causing both her and her baby to burn alive. Even as Santhosh tried to save them, he also received an electric shock and fell unconscious. Later, he said that instead of helping, the public was busy recording the tragedy on their mobile phones.

The Kadugodi police have registered a case under IPC Section 304A and are investigating the matter. The Bescom has suspended three officials and the government has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family.

At least from the comments here it is clear that it is BESCOM's problem and Siddu and DK Shi have nothing to do with it. I guess, some habitual abusers of BJP have matured because Siddu is in power in Bangalore. Regardless, BESCOM negligence is unpardonable. There was no rain, fall of tree or anything due to natural calamity. If this live wire was cut and lying to take lives, somebody must not be getting power? It means that somebody would have complained. Still, this was unattended because sarkari time for attending to such issues is after 10 am. In our housing society our people keep BESCOM guys in good spirit and hence they come at odd hours. Fixing of the live wire in open area (this location is one of the busy areas in that locality by the way) is not productive monetarily. Safety thrown out of the window literally.

Concern lingers for the public who opted to record videos instead of offering assistance. Prayers for the departed souls. Compensation by Bescom for the lives lost is crucial. Pondering the existence of quality audits and governance structures in both BESCOM and MESCOM to detect such loopholes. Additionally, questioning the presence of established guidelines and rules for the installation of overhead lines

This is the tragedy we have to face from time to time... We are predominantly overhead distribution system nation and we are at point of no return to converting into underground services... Many places are ticking time bombs including high voltage units... Rainy season and inclement windy weather add to the vulnerability of the dilapidated service lines in many locations... Very tragic to even read such incident and it is shameful of people to take opportunity to film the hapless situation... They say certain things we know only when they happen to us... For others it is a topic over tea or just another matter on the news channel... RIP to the departed souls... May God grant strength to the husband...

RIP departed souls! Very tragic and horrific accident due to the negligence of one of the worst power utility companies around! Imho; the next of kin should sue the company for a mega amount, which in all probability will be granted by the honorable courts since it's s clear cut case of negligence by the power supply company!

Electric wires are underground in Ahmedabad. The CEO of Ahmedabad Electrity Company ( now Torrent Power) was Mr Coelho and his deputy Mr Pai both from Mangalore. If all cables are underground this problem of electrocution would not have occurred, also power outages will rarely occur. In my 50 years stay there, power outages were less than 5 times in 50 years and all preinformed. ( here it occurs 5 times a day). If Mangloreans can do it there why not in Karnataka.

In the land of Buddivanta Jivgedas do you think, even in your dreams, underground cabling will be possible?? BTW; even if in advanced countries they have overhead power lines, but they have sufficient safety mechanisms in place to avoid such horrific deaths of innocent people; also they have recourse to heavy compensation in the unfortunate event like this; also unlike here where this utility supplier thinks that the consumers are animals in human form! Have you noticed how many times in a day the voltage ⚡ fluctuations take place along with sudden power outages anytime during the day or night; all households machines conk off without a rugged voltage stabilizer; I have seen LED bulbs exploding due to sudden surge in voltage; numerous times the polarity gets reversed, sometimes earthing line also shows live voltage; but the way this company is billing, it's really not worth it; 😞 unless frustrated consumers do not take them to task by mass suing for the above mentioned accident and crass deficiency of service, these chaps are not going to improve! Only divine Providence or some protection from our favourite Gods and Goddesses can save one from such catastrophic accidents!😔😞🙏
