Mangaluru, Dec 20: Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan M P has directed officials that ruthless action should be taken against illegal sand mining. He was speaking after presiding over a district sand committee meeting held here on Tuesday December 20.

“As CRZ ban on sand mining on the sea shore and river sides is in progress, the mining and geology department officials should make sure that illegal sand mining does not take place. Police officials on night duty should visit spots where illegal sand mining is rampant and conduct inspections. They should register police cases on the basis of vehicle registration numbers. They should collect details on ground level without neglecting cases,” he said.

He directed all the tahsildars to intensify investigations through control room and CC cameras.

SP C B Rishyanth said that the vehicles or boats that are used for illegal sand mining should be seized. “Extra vigil is required in non-CRZ areas,” he said.

DCP Siddarth Goel, deputy forest conservator Antony Mariappa, geology scientist Girish and others were present.

I hear this same repeated statement for years together, from the present and past commissioners speaking about taking action on illegal sand mining. Did it stop? All these sand mining companies belong to some ruling or opposition party members. They are using it to build their apartment buildings or some other civil work. Even commissioners know it. Just to eye wash the public this drama. If you go to Gurpur bridge in summer, every year near the bridge, they are removing the sand, where police vehicles are moving on the bridge in front of them.

This sand issue has become more of a unscientific way of approach by the regulators... Mining of sand is an age old practice... However de to uncontrolled construction activity (where most post activity units are mostly empty) people have concentrated on prolific sea beds... But it is for the department of mining and practical geology to survey and allocate river beds where sand is excessively collected... Regulate the activity including unscientific mushrooming construction half of which end up in incomplete edifices and most rest form 3rd or 4th empty flat owned by the super rich...

Wat a joke? Everyday so many mining happening and trucks crossing checkposts openly. This is the bread and butter of officials and MLAs punter. Instead of making statements, better to personally stand or keep trustworthy people at all checkposts. Or else for one or two days, the police will catch one truck and display it in the news and then show will go on.
