Mangalore: College Student Suicide Bid – Issue Sorted Out

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 9: Shloka Shetty, a second year B Com student, who attempted to commit suicide on September 6 by consuming floor cleaner, is recovering in a city-based hospital. The management of Sri Ramakrishna College in the city has been footing bills connected with her treatment, it is gathered.

Addressing media persons here on Thursday September 8, principal of the college, Naveen Shetty, justified his action in asking the student to bring her parents to the college in relation to staying away from classes without permission. “It has been the practice of the college to apprise the parents of the college when the wards violate college rules. The second year B Com students had bunked the class en masse, and we had asked the students to apologise. Besides, we had asked two students, who had encouraged the mass bunking, to bring their parents. Shloka Shetty agreed to bring her mother. When I contacted her mother over phone, she too had agreed to come to the college. But the next day, the student sought exemption from this, claiming that it would cause embarrassment for her. After I disagreed, she tried to end her life,” he explained.

He said that students staying away from classes are expected to record their absence in a book, citing reasons thereof. He also added that no action would be taken against the students who went on a rampage and damaged window glasses and other items at the college relating to the above incident.
