Mangaluru: MIA handles record 2.03 lac passengers in December 2023

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 1: Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) logged out of the calendar year 2023 on twin highs on the passenger front. December was particularly satisfying in that the airport handled the highest ever passengers in a month, 2.03 lac since commercial operation date (COD) of October 31, 2020.

The airport also handled record 7,548 passengers in a single day on December 31, bettering the previous mark of 7,468 passengers handled on November 25.

Contributing to the record 2.03 lac passenger mark is the fact that Mangaluru International Airport clocked 12-days in December where it handled 7,000 plus passengers with the 7,548 passengers handled on New Year’s Eve being the highest.

The bulk of this 7,000 plus passenger travel came during the weekends - December 9-10, 16-17, 23-25 and 30-31. The airport recorded footfalls of 7,089, 7,220 and 7,034 respectively in the three days up to Christmas.

The airport in November 2023 had handled 1.78 lac passengers, which hitherto was the best since COD. “The rising numbers is a clear indicator that aviation travel, domestically and internationally – notwithstanding its various challenges – is on the upswing and Mangaluru International Airport is proud to play its role in this growth,” the airport spokesperson said.

The airlines – Air India, Air India Express and IndiGo too are playing their roles in this resurgence, the spokesperson noted.

The general increase in air traffic movements (ATMs) is observed since October 29, 2023, when the winter schedule came into effect. Mangaluru International Airport recorded 1,388 ATMs in December 2023 including 1,096 domestic movements.

Uptick in business and leisure travel has contributed to the steadily increasing footfalls at the airport, which currently provides connectivity to nine domestics including six direct and rest through, and seven international destinations, respectively.

MIA need to come up with a long term plan if they are going to use current location. First one is extension of current main runway to at least fully usable 10,000 feet to accommodate larger aircraft such as Boing 777 or A-350. Even though 12,000 feet runway is recommended, due to slight inclining runway from northeast to southwest direction, 10,000 feet should be OK. The extension of the primary runway will need tall concrete pillars (similar to building bridges between two hills) and it will be an engineering marvel if it can be done. The 2nd item is to extend the secondary runway by another 2,000 feet or so to act as a backup runway. The 3rd item is to build parallel taxiway to the main runway. The 4th item would be to expand the current terminal to extent possible (limited space is available) and build a new T2 terminal near the old airport which requires some land acquisition besides leaving some space for a cargo terminal. There should be a viaduct road constructed through the hill between T1 and T2. If these projects are too expensive, then, best option would be to build an airport similar to Mopa in Goa somewhere closer to the current location where majority of the land is government owned. Even with about 1,000 acres, an airport similar to Mopa can be built with provision to add 2nd parallel runway.
