Mangaluru: Persistent garbage dumping despite CCTV, locals urge MCC action

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 12: Despite warning boards in place, a significant amount of garbage, consisting of large plastic covers and bags, is consistently dumped within 50 meters of the main road. Street dogs often tear into these bags, scattering waste onto the road. A CCTV camera has been installed on a tree at the location to deter individuals from discarding garbage, but locals allege that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) health officials are not effectively monitoring the footage or penalizing offenders.

This issue dates back two years when environmentalist Jayaprakash Ekkur, dismayed by the irresponsible behaviour of the public, protested alone for a week with a placard at the same spot. In response to his protest, the MCC installed a CCTV camera. However, according to information from local residents, the same practice of improper waste disposal has persisted despite the preventive measures.

Jayaprakash Ekkur remarked, “Children on their way to UBMC Higher Primary School at Gorigudda and Kitel Memorial High School, churchgoers, and morning walkers all use the same road and are forced to witness the unsightly scene of a garbage pile along with the foul smell.”

Rakesh, a local resident, suspects that individuals from catering businesses are responsible for dumping garbage during the early hours, possibly coming from distant areas. He suggests that if MCC officials actively monitor the situation, offenders could be tracked down.

Jacintha, the MCC member for Falnir ward, acknowledged the issue, stating, “Some unknown individuals are responsible for discarding the garbage. Despite my efforts to bring this to the attention of concerned MCC officials, residents continue to question me. Warning signs and a CCTV camera have been installed at the location, but catching offenders in the act is essential for effective enforcement.”

Disturbed by the residents' behavior, there are numerous locations for dumping garbage in and around MCC. Simply stroll around Mannagudda, Ladyhill, and Urwa Market in the morning to witness these hotspots .You can see people coming in their 2 wheelers 3 wheelers throw in the open .. And we dream about becoming a developed nation .. Without people's awareness and participation its an impossible dream .. It hurts deeply when educated and well-informed public does such activity.

This is not only in the roadside, but also in the areas where people reside near railway tracks. People just come and throw the garbage on it even though they can see the garbage bin just 50mtrs ahead of them. Moreover Its also sad to see people hesitate to pay even 25rs to 50rs every month for those who come to collect waste

So much of indirect appreciation for one of the most literate cities in the country! BTW; it's the most educated and rich staying in big mansions and flats, owning pvt vehicles, who resort to such kind of disposal of garbage when nobody's watching! The havenots will not have so much of garbage to dump at various points on a busy highway; shame on them!

This indicates short of garbage skip. Provide big skip in that location and arrange timely disposal by municipality. Today you stop there tomorrow another site will be observed with rubbish. This is clear indication that municipality is not providing sufficient skips in required locations .If skips are provided and if public not using them or throwing beside the skip, then you can put a huge fine. that will change human mind set of human. MCC must send their officers and staffs 24x7 duty by rotation all around the city to check, instead of riding poor roadside vendors. Or keep garbage bin in certain places where public is throwing the garbage. Definitely peoples will throw in those bins.

Mangalore Municipal Corporation and Mangalore Police must take prompt action and punish the culprits. During my visit I have seen a few truckers and bikers throwing garbage bags out of their vehicles while driving. We have seen, we are seeing and experiencing this nuisance in Mumbai every day. Mumbaikar's lost thier way when most the city dwellers started moving to remote areas like Andheri, Borivilili, Malad, etc etc ..... there were no garbage collection system in remote areas. But the practice remained. First thing you seen on your footpaths is DOG POOP, built up illegal shops and their garbage. Mumbai is losing the battle as it grows bigger and bigger. Mangaluru has the opportunity to educate people and manage this menace. Please do not lose this battle Mangaluru residents.

Yes garbage is dumped but why do you know our Mr. Caretaker MCC? Provide garbage bins everywhere and collect garbage at night like from 9-11 and morning 5-8 Mangalore will remain clean. Even when we go to offices there are no bins kept. Where to through a used tissue or empty juice can? We are no more third world country. Everything is adapted like western countries. So see samples and implement. Anither main issue which hate is people spitting. Why? Sane people outside india dont dare to spit

This garbage dumping is a real menace... Astonishingly we see lumps of garbage in remote road sections away from where the garbage would have been generated... As if some vehicle has collected lot of bags and dumped in leisure... Dogs and cows scavenging is a horrible sight to watch... These people dumping clandestinely are no less than terrorists or anti social elements... Criminal cases must be imposed on them with jail terms of 2 years....
