Mangaluru, Jan 17: Sulthan Bathery and Tannirbhavi, scenic spots along the Phalguni River in Mangaluru, are popular destinations where people gather for leisure. The ferry boat service from Sulthan Bathery to Tannirbhavi adds to the charm, attracting numerous visitors. However, a concerning trend has emerged with the increasing pollution of the Phalguni River along these stretches.

Evenings at Sulthan Bathery and Tannirbhavi, intended for relaxation, are marred by the sight of litter strewn along the riverbanks. Despite the presence of seating arrangements and parks overlooking the Phalguni River at Sulthan Bathery, the surroundings are tarnished by garbage, including alcohol bottles, tetra packs, plastic, thermocol pieces, coconut shells, and even medical items.

Sadly, despite the provision of dustbins, the public continues to litter in the water, demonstrating a disregard for the environment. Local officials appear to be lax in imposing hefty fines for littering in water bodies. Additionally, the commercial area around Sulthan Bathery, despite regular waste collection, witnesses dumping of garbage into the river.

The public's demands for development and tourist facilities clash with their responsibility to maintain cleanliness. Notably, environmentalists like Jeeth Milan Roche, Dinesh Holla, activist Nagaraj, and the Anti-pollution drive (APD) consistently raise awareness about the consequences of garbage dumping. Unfortunately, public negligence persists.

Environmentalists stress the urgent need for officials to take swift action, implementing permanent fines for offenders.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche says, "We are fortunate to have rivers like Netravati and Phalguni, but regrettably, they are being polluted by the improper disposal of items such as liquor bottles, sanitary pads, mixed waste, and even medical waste. During clean-up efforts, it is disheartening to find boxes full of expired medicines. It is crucial to uphold the cleanliness of our rivers. When the river water undergoes laboratory testing, it lacks the essential characteristics of natural river water. Conducting such tests can benefit the fisherman community. Authorities must take decisive action against those who pollute our water bodies, imposing strict penalties to promote a green and clean city.

“It must be noted that waste dumped near mangroves, which serve as crucial breeding grounds for fish, adversely impacts fish breeding due to pollution. It is imperative that we recognize and address this issue promptly,” he says.

Rashmi Ullal says, "Everyone desires a clean city, and it is the responsibility of every citizen to keep our surroundings pristine. Unfortunately, we regularly witness the improper dumping of waste along highways and rivers, which is truly unfortunate. The absence of a proper drainage system needs urgent attention. When tourists visit Mangaluru to admire its beauty, the sight of waste in tourist places leaves a negative impression and can contribute to the spread of diseases. Swift and decisive action by concerned officials is crucial, and it is the collective duty of everyone to contribute to maintaining a clean city."

Cleanliness -- civic sense is to be inculcated in Schools -- many countries have constant ... continuous -classes - on cleanliness - IN Japan etc -- So quality and cleanliness is not by accident --only by diligent efforts -- concern for the neighbor -- however lack of education ensures negligence on this -- (although we see many in BENZ and other Posh cars dropping garbage on the sly --)-- there are many who aim garbage at their neighbors house -- like missiles --if not seen or silently drop on the roads -- POSSIBLY -- literacy -- cleanliness -- campaigns -- heavy fines for Dirtying -- like in Singapore-- possibly can mitigate ---- “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” John Wesley, ------is the slogan-- hopefully can add RAMA -- JESUS -- MOHAMMAD -- BUDDHA -- few others -- posters--

There's no use assigning blame to the government or elected representatives. The inclination towards being unclean and dirty seems ingrained in our culture, despite boasting about our past achievements. Such behavior contradicts any sense of pride in our heritage.

Throwing thrash around is in our blood. Scientists should find a vaccine to cure this disease. Charmadi ghat is another dustbin. Devotees offer flowers to God but offer thrash to mother nature.
