Update

Beltangady, Oct 9: DG and IGP Neelam Achuta Rao who was in the city has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lac to the family of Mahadeva S Mane, who lost his life battling against a group of Naxals at Manjalakadu forest near Savanaalu near Beltangady here in the early hours of Sunday October 9.

The encounter occurred at around 12.30 am, when the police team was on a search operation in the forest.

Mahadeva S Mane (40), a Bijapur-based Anti Naxal Force (ANF) police died during the encounter.

Speaking to presspersons Neelam Achuta Rao said that the case will be investigated by internal security division. In addition to Rs 10 lac compensation, Rs 5 lac will be given by the chief minister.

The ANF team went on combing operations at 8.30 pm on Saturday alongwith some local police, it is said. At 12.30 am they countered a team of Naxals consisting of 15 members. It is suspected that the team is Netravati Naxal group led by Vikram Gowda. Many policemen were injured in the incident after a round of bullets were exchanged between police and Naxals, who dissolved into the dark forest.

DK district SP Labhu Ram arrived at the spot and the combing operation has now resumed, as per latest report at 9.15 am.

Police forces from Chikamaglur and Shimoga district have also been called for the combing operation.

It is learnt that after the rain receded, Naxal movement was active in the region. There were suspicions of members belonging to Naxal team visiting a few houses in the villages and collecting grocery items.

Mane's body was taken for post martem but the bullet could not be found. It was then shifted to a private hospital in Ujire for an X-ray. Assistant director general of police Bipin Gopalkrishna, SP DK district Labhu Ram, IG Alok Mohan, SP of ANF Vasudev Moorthy are at the spot.

Mane is survived by wife and two daughters.

Altogether around 300 personnel have been pressed into the combing operations, but chances of tracing the Naxals is less now as they might have moved deep into the forest or may have crossed into Chikamaglur side, sources said.

Policeman sacrifced his life and compensated by mere 10 lakh. This is the value for his scrfice. Even blood money for vehicle accident is around four times more than this amount in gulf.

It is good and encouraging to see that we have an efficient police force who have quickly gone into action at a crucial time. In situations like these the local police are not left to themselves but The Director General of Police has come personally to encourage all concerned and assure them of his support all the time. The department has ordered contingents from other areas like Chickmagalur and Shimoga to join forces with the local police in combing operations. What is more heartening is to see the gracious attitude of all the police officers like Mr. Achutha Rao, Mr. Gopalkrishna, Mr. Alok Mohan Mr. Laburam being present for the funeral ceremony of constable Mahadeva Mane.

It is my hope that ere long the perpetuaters of crime will be nabbed by The Police Force so that people in Belthangady and the surrounding areas may live in peace.

It is sad that a precious life of Mr Mane has been lost in the battle with Naxals. What is surprising is the SILENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS! If a naxal had been killed, by this time Human rights activists, Amnesty International, pseudointellectuals, likes of Teesta Setalwad would have raised a hue and cry in the national & international media about the "fake encounter" "atrocity by ANF" in glorious terms!!!

Naxalites may have some valid grievances and they should participate in the political process and create awareness among the general population. Armed conflict is not the answer to their problems. They have pursuing their goals thru armed conflict for the past several decades and have not succeeded. In a way, they are affecting the lives of hundreds of normal people and their activities borders with terrorist activities. They somehow do not believe in the philosophy of democracy and we know from the past that communism results in dictatorship. I believe negotiation is the only way to way out the problem. The perceptions of the people towards them are more sympathizer than that of the movement carried out if any by minority groups.

Fully endorse the comments of Yogesh Pujari, Manipal. Irrespective of religion, the higher caste in Karnataka who are less than 5% enjoy more than 70% of the wealth and even the power like DC, SP majority belongs to higher caste/class.

Provide basic needs of the poor, the money allocated to the needy by the govt. let it be properly utilized rather swindled by corrupt, third rate politicians.

Poor Mannina maga, ( solider of our land ) gave his life. May his soul rest in peace.

The root of naxalism in India resides in its unequal society and its perverted social system.Historically Indian society oppressed majority of its masses in the name of casts, religion or ethnicity. So the revolt of this people are completely justified. See the Karnataka or any other states in India it is the so called higher casts, rich notorious goons who are in power. Yedurappa to Kumarswami where are the oppressed mass in decision making process ? And Police and other forces are protecting this oppressive system. When a police get killed so called peace loving people, poor loving people start crying.

But what about those poor who are getting butchered by the state daily through its inhuman system which allow looters like Reddy to snatch all from most oppressed people of this nation. And shamelessly our police are protecting these looters. Counter Violence of oppress people are completely justified in this unjust society where they are facing more cruel violence everyday. And no doubt naxals are fighting the battle of poor of this country and in fact every oppressed person is naxal today.

For India the grestest threat are the Maoists. This threat is much greater than terrorism. Each year hundreds of innocent men in uniform and ordinary people are killed by Maoists, many more than any terrorist attack. Yet we have our so called intellectuals and writers who support this scum. Any supporter of this scum is equivalent to scum and the only place for these misguided people is behind bars. They should be tried for sedition and war against the state and the constitution and put away for good.

This selflesss poor policeman has given up his life for the country while fighting the naxals. Now what will happen to his family? Will the govt. recognise his great sacrifice and take full care of his family or simply announce a compensation of one or two lakh rupees and consider the case closed? I am saying this based on my previous experiences of similar incidences.
