Mangalore, Oct 10: It was a heart-rending scene at the city's SCS Hospital here on Monday October 10, after Zabina, a 19-year-old girl suddenly died.

Zabina had been admitted to the hospital on October 5 after she complained of abdominal pain. She was then diagnosed with appendicitis. On October 6 she underwent a surgery, and was said to be fine.

However, on check up, the family doctor said that the infection had spread inside her body, after which the doctor who operated on her was called. It was decided that she had to be operated immediately, and on October 7, she was again taken for another surgery.

Less than 48 hours after the second surgery, she collapsed. Her family members have alleged that doctor's negligence led to her death.

Zabina was from Addur here. She was known to be a healthy girl.

Following the incident, a crowd gathered at the hospital premises and demanded an explanation. The doctor is yet to arrive at the spot, and a statement is awaited.

Miss Kusuma, We lost our sister due to Dr's negligence. We exposed the truth to the public and media with only one intention. That it should not happen to your sister, brother or any other dependants of you or any others. Being in contact with this Dr from the day my sister was admitted, i can say it very clearly that its Dr's mistake and he deserves to be blamed. My kind suggestion to you is, be a human and try to feel our pain before it happens to you.

Dear Nawaz, please accept my condolences. I heard the issue has been settled for Rs 1 lac. As a Surgeon myself, i can tell you that this is a clear case of negligence. No patient should die following appendicectomy ! And it is not such a critical surgery as Dr.Shubhakar has said (requiring 5 surgeons!). And even if one has 31 years experience, one can still be wrong !But please tell people of your community to make proper enquiries and go to good, well qualified doctors for surgery than go behind Doctors / Hospitals of same caste or religion.

It is possible for a person's appendix to burst and if immediate medical treatment is not given on time then appendiceal rupture would cause peritonitis, a serious infection of the abdomen, which may lead to septicemia and eventually death.

Rightly said Mr. Austin. Problem in Mangalore or in India is that the Doctors are not held accountable for their negligence. They go scott free. More over why don't the media publish the doctors name as well. If media starts bringing out the doctors names who default on their duties may be a sense of fear will remain in them so that they would do their duties more carefully. Right now all they are concerned about is, how many hosptials they can visit and provide consulation and how to see more number of patients. I do not say all doctors fall in this category but many do.

My opinion to this case is:
    1) Obviously if the teen aged girl entered the hospital at the extreme case of appendicitis, certainly the doctors will do their best to operate. Supposedly the appendicitis was burst before the operation and the poisonus outburst had already spread over all her body even though the doctors will try their best to operate with medications and if required will have second operation also which will be a difficult task for the doctors.
    2) If the appendicitis outburst was due to the unsuccessful operation of the doctors then doctors are responsible for negligence.
That’s all I can opine pertaining to this news.
Children are precious to their parents. Death comes to everyone in one way or the other. A young teenaged girl is lost to her parents and that is a sad matter. May her R.I.P

Howeever no physician can give gurantee for the life of any patient including his own....

If physician is found lacking in taking care of the patient,,, then MCI should punish him....not the mob.

If this trend continues,,, it might be difficult for the physicians to practice medicine freely.

Again folks, life and death is in God almighty's hands,,, not in physicians hands,,, physician is only a tool in Gods hands.

In this modern age of Technology the Diagnosis of any disease has been made faster and the on going treatment has been made quicker than the olden days.
However no Medical Practitioners or Surgeons can deny ACCOUNTABILITY. A competent District Medical Authority must maintain their success vs failure analysis report. Then you can see vast difference in their attitude.

Shocking and very sad to hear Zabina's death due to doctor's negligence in SCS hospital.

There is no difference between vultures and some of the money minded corrupt doctors.
Few years back, I visited a very famous hospital for general check up in Mangalore. The doctor knew that I was not working in Mangalore and had come on holidays, he checked my BP and told me my blood pressure is very high and have to go for couple of tests, hangio etc. and scared me. Doctor was pressuring me to visit some hospital for check up and within myself I knew, he was telling me the wrong thing as he is supposed to take my ECG before his comments.

Same evening I consulted a ordinary doctor without telling him my visit to the hospital. He checked my BP which was very normal and took my ECG also and the report was,I have a very healthy heart & he told me I have very healthy body.

Many times these type of vulture type doctor create phobia/fear in the mind of healthy person and make them sick. Once a person becomes sick in mind, then eventually he/she will become sick in body too.

Definitely here in SCS, this case is purely a case of negligence and wrongly handled. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family. May her soul rest in peace .

Get some sense before speaking, here we aren't speaking of a mistake at work, here it involves human life, human life is priceless as we all acknowledge. I come from a very professional background and employed in the US, unlike the gulf where there is no authority or responsibility. If mistakes are committed with involves damages or losses, you are either sacked or have to prove your innocence in writing....By your logic a car mechanic always repairs vehicles, but does it with the engine offf and a doctor performs operations with the body functioning, hence he is paid more and earns more respect from society, hence a doctor like a teacher, nurse is called a noble profeesion. I hope i have answered your queries, and with regards to knowing my profession, i dont think its your business to know it, as it is a public forum and everyone is free to air his opinions,

Appendicitis is the infection of the appendix, which is attached to the colon. Appendicitis is very dangerous, as the inflamed appendix could burst at any moment, releasing dangerous bacteria into the abdomen which could kill excessive amounts of healthy tissue. This can occur anywhere from hours after the beginnings of infection to 10 days later. After the appendix ruptures, and infection takes hold, she would need aggressive antibiotics administered intravenously for her to have a fighting chance. Considering the whole process and bacteria replication, she could die hours after the appendix ruptures.
Despite modern antibiotics, high-tech diagnostic machines and surgical advances, appendicitis still kills thousands of people around the world. But that toll could be reduced if emergency room and primary care doctors were quicker to call for surgical consultations in cases of suspected appendicitis which sometime they fail to do so.
May her soul rest in peace!

Most of the Hospitals (Owned by DOCTORS)in Mangalore are run on purely Commercial basis. Priority is MONEY. Very few Doctors these days have any ethics. My Dear Mother lost her life in one of the so called (then) reputed hospitals run by a Doctor, he was known to my brother who was a Medical Rep - inspite of this they did not allow us take the body without clearing the dues - this after having bled us right royally and in the end - her death was purely due to negligence (1) They did not have a stretcher to rush her to the ICU - (2) there was no Oxygen cylinder - this after the operation was botched up by the doc knowing fully well she was a diabetic - end of the day they knew we had the money and my mother was used as a guinea pig. Like many things in M'lore - there is no accountability - attitude is "who cares?" - high time people file suits against these men in white coats. These quacks need to be punished. I sympathise with the family of Zabina, may her soul RIP -

Now a days increases of hospitals and treatment is converted as Commercial. All hospitals purchased costly equipments and founders invest lots of money on that. any how they need to recover same ony from any source. It seen common as take a scan and try to let pationt to undergo surgery.
In this case clearly doctors negligiance visible. He must have to take care about infections during the surgery. Or he has to prescribe proper medicines after surgery either than another surgery.
This is lesson to all big hospitals...

Sad to hear this. While Doctors or nurses are entitled for errors because they too are human ..however in recent times there is a general lack of commitment, honesty and a service minded attitude.Every one seems to be behind money ..that seems to be the only criteria ..gone are the days we could find human gems who are dedicated, committed and service oriented.

scs is as good as any hospital in mangalore. doctors are not god. doctors will do their best. reamining is left to almighty. human mind is to blame the doctors immediately and the hospital.

Inna lillahi wa inna elahi rajvoon....May god give the strength to her family to overcome grief of the loss of young lady.

SCS hospital has the reputation of goodwill of public as far as I know.It could be the bad luck of the family and I don't think there could be any medical negligence/duty lapse.. as alleged by family, however, the real story only god knows....

Nothing new in this. This is a hopeless hospital. I lost my mother due to negligence of nurses in this hospital.

Poor people in India have no voice and the rich will never ever see a day like this in their lives. This type of incidents we cannot leave it to GOD to solve. Seeking justice through courts is only the way left.

This is a sad incdent. I feel there should eb a proper enquiry into this incident where a healthy 19 year old died after a surgery. I am sure the guilty will be punished.

Sack the doctor at once for negligence and he should be held accountable, unless the incident seen as unforseen, and a precedent should be set. Let him explain in writing the series of events leading to this unfortunate event and an apology to the family of the deceased.
