Beltangady, Oct 11: ANF staff Mahadeva S Mane who died during a Naxal encounter in the thick forest of Manjala area in Navoor village of Savanalu taluk here on Sunday October 9, may well have been killed by a bullet triggered by his own companions. Police investigation in this regard is on.

Reliable sources informed that during the combing operation, Mane’s ANF comrade fired a bullet that might have hit a tree or any other strong object first and richocheted towards Mane. This was purely unintentional, and it is now suspected that to hide the incident, the ANF staff fired a few more rounds of bullets at the trees  to show an encounter that was actually less dramatic than it was made out to be.

This suspicion has raised mainly because the bullet retrieved from Mane’s body has been found to be from a gun used by police. Senior police officials have gathered information on this fact by talking to doctors who carried out the post mortem and have also spoken to forensic experts.

What happened at the spot?

At around 11.20 pm, a group of 10 people walked towards the trap set by police. The ANF team suspected them to be Naxalites and were about to attack, but as the men had flashlights, they detected police presence and began firing. The ANF too retaliated until the men disappeared into the forest. However, it is not certain if Mane was killed by the men or the police. The fact that he was hit on the back, points towards a possibility of the latter.

Western IGP Alok Mohan said that truth will be out only after assistant director general of police of internal security division Bipin Gopalkrishna investigates the case thoroughly.

In the photograph Mr. Mane looks very handsome and might be a born leaders. That might be case, within the group there are few detractors who have used this opportunity to eradicate him. Enemy within is more dangerous than enemy from outsiders.

Any how due to politics of internal issues we lost a good soldier.
Our political leaders do not have will power to solve the basic issue of the poor, shelter, food, clothing. Once this is solved, then they have no issue for winning the elections.

Last time too SI was shot & naxals were blamed-that time also it was rumoured that police bullet had killed(hit) from back, in darkness they got confused him to be a naxalite.
A bullet cannot richochet when fired & come from behind like Boomerang & hit from the back.
I have used .22, 303 & LMG's when in NCC, & has seen how bullets get richochet after hitting big static stones.
In Romania police or military used to fire their weapons on pavements which hit the protesters in legs after richochetting. They didn't come back from behind those who fire- but from the front.
The assumption or theory put forward is a COVER-UP by some vested interests, to put the blame of bungling on others.

Police handling guns and entering forest areas should be properly trained by the special forces or we will see more of these incidents.

It is good and encouraging to see that we have an efficient police officers who have quickly gone into action at a crucial time. In situations like these the local police are not left to themselves but The Director General of Police has come personally to encourage the local Police Force of his support all the time. The department has ordered contingents from other areas like Chickmagalur and Shimoga to join forces with the local police in combing operations. What is more heartening is to see the gracious attitude of all the police officers like Achutha Rao, Mr. Gopalkrishna, Mr. Alok Mohan, Mr. Seemanth Singh, Mr. Laburam being present for the funeral ceremony of constable Mahadeva Mane.

It is my hope that ere long the perpetuaters of crime will be nabbed by The Police Force so that people around Belthangady and the surrounding areas may live in peace.

It is called "Friendly Fire" in military language. US Dhrone missiles used to target Afghan soldiers instead of Taliban by accident. Next day,on the news paper headline shows "US friendly fire killed 10 soldiers" . Unfortunately, here police didn't target Mane ,it hit hit tree and richocheted towards Mane.Total bad luck. Our police dept is always at the receiving end.

HM Ashok, claimed in the media, that it is a job of hired naxals from Tamilnadu. What an extra-efficient HM. He knows the origin of naxals but did not know of the police bullet that killed Mane.

This is INDIA, i am sure this episode might end up stating that the naxalites had fired and used a gun which actually belongs to KSRP, which went missing and blah blah , investigations are on, so on and so forth. if incase one of his team members has shot him, then god bless the KSRP, anti naxal force etc etc, for giving superior training skills and inferior heavy weapons.

So, is it just speculation that there were naxalites in that area ? Could that group be local hunters for who the police had spread a trap ?
