Kundapur, Apr 30: According to a survey conducted by officials from the district horticulture department, 21 hectares (52 acres) of arecanut farms owned by 109 farmers have suffered extensive damage due to high-velocity winds and rain that hit the taluk on April 20.

Nearly 7,000 arecanut trees were toppled by the winds, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 6.5 lac. The horticulture department officials have submitted the report to the government.

Molahalli village bore the brunt of the damage, with 12 hectares of arecanut farms owned by 55 farmers affected. In Amparu, seven hectares of farmland owned by 36 farmers and two hectares in Neralakatte owned by 18 farmers were damaged.

On April 20, Tenka village in Kaup received 158 mm of rainfall. Mala in Karkala received 149 mm, Mudarangadi 128 mm, Hejmady 117 mm, Uliyaragoli 106 mm, while Kaup and Innanje received 106 mm of rain.

Areas severely affected by the damage, such as Kavradi, Karkunje, Amparu, and Molahalli, received 100 mm of rainfall. Overall, Udupi district received 40 mm of rain on April 20.
