Bangalore: Is Coal Shortage Only Reason for Power Woes?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Oct 14: At a time when the state is reeling under power shortage, the question as to whether coal shortage caused by Telangana agitation is the only trigger for this situation has arisen from various quarters. A search for answers has brought out some embarrassing facts.

One of the things that came to light was that the eighth unit of Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) has not at all been operational. An engineer manning the station revealed that the unit, which has a capacity to produce 250 mw of power, is backed by a unique design of boiler-turbine-generator system. None of the other power generators in the country have this design.

Surprisingly, Bharath Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), which manufactured these items, does not have any spares of the unit with it. Without spares, the unit cannot be run. BHEL is expected to manufacture spare parts and provide them to the plant, and it will take some time before it does so, it is learnt.

The officials failed to provide convincing reply for the drastic decline in coal stocks with RTPS, although technical director, Dr H N Narayan Prasad, tried to assign it to stoppage of coal supply from Singareni coal fields.

However, during his meeting with the officials of RTPS, leader of opposition in the state assembly, Siddaramaiah, found out that shortage of coal supply has not been the only reason for the power woes. Siddaramaiah, who visited power plants and held a meeting with the officials, sought figures for the last three months, and found to his dismay that coal supply from Singareni and Western Coal Fields had been more than what was scheduled, in the months of July and August. He therefore, found it hard to digest the state government’s claim that power generation has largely suffered on account of shortage in coal supply.

At present, five units of RTPS except 1, 2, and 3 which are either under maintenance or repairs have been generating 933 mw of power. At the same time, Bellary Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 500 mw, which began generating power on October 3 after closing down for annual repairs, has gradually risen to its production to 405 mw of power, coming out as a beacon of hope for the power-starved state. Executive director of the station, G Ratnamma, says that the stock of coal at the unit is sufficient for 14 days and that the station has been receiving some coal stock every day.

Mr. Krishnaraj thinks power generation is like childs play or perhaps he thinks setting up a power plant is like setting up a coconut oil extraction unit......simply having a lake does not mean u can generate power out of it....there should be a generation potential (technical feasibility) and commercial viability (commercial feasibility)......please go on google and study how complicated the power business is technically and commercially....even a 10paise difference in tarriff can ruin your feasibilities......intensive studies and clearances are carried for over at least 3 years or more b4 you setup a power plant.

Mr. Nagesh Nayak seems to have done a Phd in Power Engineering and this fool has got the entire equation wrong......it would be wise enough to keep quite if you dont understand a particular issue and I guess this holds good to other pseudo-intellectuals who have no idea on this issue and raise comments just bcos they "Thought it was like that"........I have been in the power industry since past 8 years now.....everyone in the industry knows that this situation is bcos of 3 reasons
    1) increase of imported coal prices from indonesia
    2) shortage of domestic coal
    3) New plants not being commissioned as planned owing to land aquisition issue

India really has a problem with coal now and so many plants are suffering owing to this...there are some 600MW rated plants running on just 350MW bcos of this shortage....people protest when it comes to nuclear plants but we have no other option......we neither have suffiecient oil, gas nor coal.....when there is no power at home electricity is dear to us....without the Udupi Power plant the situation could have been much more worse....just think about this......and please BJP or congress have very little to do with Power generation. Power project policies are well drafted and are also being monitored.....And blore may get 24x7 (as quoted by Mr.Nayak) bcos load shedding is in progress elsewhere in karnataka so as to provide Blore with power 24x7.....Jai Ho Mr. Nagesh Nayak

Very interesting story of Karnataka @ "Kattalu".Really disgusting to know that this govt never has any pre plan or foresight with regarding power shortage which is a vital subject for development and day today affairs. Yesterday in Bangalore there was a high level meeting between prospective investors of Foreign Industrialist and Govt of Karnataka in which all of sudden POWER WENT OFF!!..What a shame!!Why this govt has not keeping it's reputation at least in front of Foreign delegates? How FDI will inflow if the message we did give yesterday that also in the Conference Hall of Vidhana Soudha? SHAME...........SHAME........SHAME.

Coming to the point Shobha K, Energy minister I though earlier an efficient minister but it proved to be very wrong. She was only interested in accumulating wealth for her. Occasionally she prefers to give statement and interview for TV media to pass the bucks to oppn and Central Govt.In between Govt of Karnataka and ministry concerned completely forgotten the pathetic situation of power crisis in Karnataka.Power crisis not a new issue but managing only made difference.By the by Govt want to purchase Power for inflated price to have some.......Poor management and presence mind made worse in Energy ministry that need to be condemned. This kind of situation in Karnataka,I,guess unprecedented but still nobody panic or serious.

ITALIAN LED CONGRESS IS THE MAIN REASON FOR POWER WOES.

    1. STEP MOTHERLY TREATMENT FOR BJP RULED STATES.

    2. FUELLING TELANAGANA ISSUE .

    3. NO PROPER PLANNING NEITHER ON ELECTRICITY GENERATION NOR ON DEVEOPMENT.

    4. ALL NALAYAK LEADERS WHO KNOWS ONLY TO MINT MONEY THRU VARIOUS SCAMS.

DUE TO HARDWORKING, HONEST & PATRIOTIC BJP GOVERNMENT IN KARNATAKA , WE ARE HAVING 24X7 ELECTRIITY SUPPLY IN NAMMA BENGALURU.

    JAI HO.

    I fully agree with Krishnaraj.

It is quite funny that our elected representatives/govts in State and Centre are not keen on solving power cuts. Actually, power is the life blood of every citizen and the industries. Much more focus is required to get enough electricity which is the basic need for development.

Whatever the reason? It is the responsibility of our Minister Ms Shoba Karandlaje? She will never think about aam admi as she is leading a luxurious life... She will not get the heat of the power cut unless personally she feels the power cut difficulties. why there is no power cut in Mumbai? Ms Shoba will never ever feel this heat as there is no power cut problem at her residence.

I believe, ministers lack knowledge on the subject and the portfolio they hold. They are busy blaming opposition party. Get the existing plants run with full capacity! Politicians busy hiding from corruption issues rather than attending the dire need of basic amenities such as power, road and water! If they cannot attend it...why are they on the job? Is it only to loot tax payer and natural resources?

Coal Shortage is one of the main reason for Power shortage, but at the outskirt Central Govt is Equal responsible for this too. You can observe today in majority of the states facing power problems are NON CONGRESS led govt like Karnataka, Andrapradesh, Tamilnadu, W.B. There seems to be not much to take for these states from the Center. Neither Govt willing to sort out the situation since 2G FIRE has been stuck in their Ass. They are busy is trying to evade and to put water on FIRE.
However, States like Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andra should not only depend on Center for each and every minute things. They should start Generating more powers themselves. They need to be Self Reliant. Need to do new Inventions.. There are lot of small Lakes in and around the State. Try to install small set up in each and every district which can generate power for themselves. If GMR Infra can generate power in mlore & can sell outside at higher rate why cannot govt generate the same power.
Try to implement some of the good Initiatives taken by Mr. Modi in gujarath. If you ask anyone in Gujarath " When was the last power cut in their state ? " then the probable answer you may get is that " I DONT REMEMBER".

No...its the lack of will power of Shobhakka that is main reason for this problem. These people think that the common man is dumb enough to be fooled.During the times of election or before elections there is 24 hours of power supply but immediately after elections shut down starts.Atleast have mercy on the poor children who work hard and study at night for a better future..Atleast let them learn something and become something valuable to the society..not like you uneducated and corrupt..
