Congress Prepares to Take on BJP in 2013 Assembly Polls in MP

Bhopal, Oct 14 (PTI): With an eye on victory in 2013 assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, the state Congress declared the list of its office-bearers last week to take the ruling BJP government head-on.

The list was announced by the Congress in New Delhi almost six months after Kantilal Bhuria took over as party's State president.

Congress can ill afford to loose the 2013 assembly elections as it has already lost two polls in 2003 and 2008.

The new media chairman of the State Congress, Manak Agarwal told PTI that the new office-bearers were well equipped to throw the BJP out of power from Madhya Pradesh.

Agarwal said the party has already begun its programmes all over the state to expose the corruption and shortcomings in the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh.

The 2003 polls were lost by Congress after the end of 10 years of rule by Digvijay Singh while in 2008, the party lost when former union minister Suresh Pachouri was the State Congress president.

When the BJP won in 2008, it was the first time, the party won two successive assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.

The Congress knows that it will be facing an uphill task in the 2013 assembly elections as the BJP would be looking to record a hat-trick of victories in the State.

When Bhuria was made State Congress president, former union minister Arjun Singh's son Ajay Singh was made the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh assembly.

The two are said to be proteges of Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh who is expected to play a key role during the 2013 assembly elections.

Singh has already announced that he will spend a lot of time in Madhya Pradesh after the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year.

For Singh too, a Congress victory in next assembly polls is of great importance as he wants to avenge the 2003 defeat.
