Mangalore, Oct 14: "Mere slogans and jathas are not enough to sustain language. Respect for Kannada should come from one's heart," said MP Nalin Kumar.

He spoke after inaugurating the stage programme at Town Hall on the sidelines of Kannada Nudi Teru awareness campaign organized by Kannada Development Authority and DK and Udupi districts which entered the city on Friday October 14 morning.

Nalin Kumar further said that it was lamentable that the situation has reached a stage where an awareness campaign was required to promote the state language.
However, the efforts put in by the Kannada Development Authority need to be applauded, he said.

Kannada Development Authority president Mukyamantri Chandru said that though people in Mangalore have love for Kannada language, not many people care to display signboards in Kannada outside their shops. He was also disappointed with the poor hospitality given to artistes who were from different parts of the state.

ZP president Shailaja Bhat apologized for the same in her speech.

Deputy speaker Yogish Bhat presided. MLA U T Khader, ZP vice-president Dhanalaxmi Janardhan, deputy mayor Geetha Nayak, TP president Bhavya Gangadar Poojary, Vishnu Naik, Mangala Nayak, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar among others were present.

Earlier, a colourful Kannada Nudi Teru procession was organized from Jyothi circle in which Dollu Kunita artistes among other cultural troupes participated. However, poor attendence, both during the procession and the stage programmme at Town Hall, took the fizz out of the campaign.
