Hazare Begins Vow of Silence Sunday

Ralegan-Siddhi (Maharashtra), Oct 15 (IANS): Anna Hazare will go on a 'maun vrat' - vow of silence - from Sunday for an indefinite period due to medical reasons, an aide said.

"He will not speak or communicate with anybody for an indefinite period on health grounds," the aide told reporters here Saturday.

During his 'maun vrat', the 74-year-old Hazare will not travel outside Ralegan-Siddhi. He has also postponed his five-state tour till after the winter session of parliament, usually held November-December.

It is not known when Hazare will travel to Pakistan. He had announced the plans for the visit last month.

Hazare's 'maun vrat' comes barely three days after the attack on his aide and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan. He was assaulted in his Supreme Court chamber in Delhi for his remarks advocating referendum in Kashmir.

Another Hazare aide, Arvind Kejriwal, claimed that the anti-corruption crusaders were getting threats through phone calls and SMSes.

Kejriwal termed the fresh threats as a "part of a conspiracy" to derail the anti-corruption movement.
