Udupi: When 'Rescuers' Turn Looters for Accident Victim...

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Oct 17: Many a time we come across stories of people coming to the help of those involved in accidents. Sometimes, however, there are also cases where instead of helping, the 'rescuers' actually turn out robbers!

In the case of Anurag (22), a first year MBA student of T A Management Institute, Manipal, that is exactly what happened. Four unidentified persons who appeared to be trying to help him out of a difficulty, turned out to be looters who not only took away his belongings, but also ripped his ATM account.

Anurag, a native of Bihar, was in his car, when all of a sudden he lost control over his vehicle at Indiranagar in Badagubettu village here. The car hit the protective railings of a culvert at the spot.

Four strangers approached him presumably to help him out of the situation. Soon, instead of helping, the gang reportedly threatened the student of dire consequences, and snatched away his mobile phone, three gold rings, and an ICICI Bank debit card. They also forcibly collected the PIN of the debit card, the student said in a complaint filed in Manipal police station.

Anurag, who reached the college campus later, was allegedly denied admission as he did not possess his identity card.  In the complaint, the student said an amount of Rs 22,000 had been drawn by the looters from his account.

Superintendent of police (SP), Dr Y S Ravikumar, deputy SP, Jayant Shetty, and Manipal police inspector, H D Kulkarni, visited the spot and made enquiries. A case was registered in Manipal police station.

I smell something fishy here.. A bihari and giving out his ATM code so easily? I have lot of Bihari friends and they are very smart. In my opinion same smartness is being used here to fool everyone into thinking he has been robbed. Police can confirm by ATM Cameras.

This is an strange act, but this is not new in our society, during bajpe plane crash a lot of people came to help the victims in a humanitarian heart and also few came to loot the belongings of the victims, when there is no job and money with the people obviously their mind will plan for such acts.

Many outside people say that people from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are educated, helpful, friendly, peace-loving etc. All these people are blind. From my experience, people from these 2 districts are no better than other people from Karataka. Eg. If there is an opportunity to steal from helpless people, then they will steal like in the above incident, or when the mangalore air crash happened a couple of years ago, and local people were stealing jewellery from dead passengers and from luggages etc.

Same like when there is a road accident. Most people in the twin districts will only watch the affected people, not even a single person will come to help the injured. I have seen this in road accidents so many times.

Just an observation. Peoplle in these districs are more curious, opportunistic, and lack guts for taking initiative or being a leadeer in times of crisis. More often than not, they have a tendency to give excuses and complain.

People run after politicians blaming them of corruption and all evil in the society. It is easy to blame someone. Like Justice Hegde said, until the time people do not look inwards, the corruption and terrorism will remain. Only then people will see corrupt as corrupt.

This is very sad incident. I think police can identify the looters at the ATM location with help of camera. (HOpe this is working). Cannot imagine this is happening in our district.

"Yada Raja, Tada Praja", when the rulers are looters, what else can we expect. When rulers are not afraid to loot their own subjects, how come these 4 men will have the courtsy of treating the guest with "Atithi Devo Bhava".
