Congress Sets Up 4 Panels to Run Party in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, Oct 18 (IANS): The Congress has formed four state-level committees to run party affairs in Uttar Pradesh, a party spokesman said.

This decision comes after Sunday's day-long meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) functionaries with party general secretary Digvijay Singh, who is also in-charge of the state.

One of the committees will look after organisational management, another discipline, and another is for handling the media. The fourth will look after the party's publications.

In addition to these four committees, Digvijay Singh has appointed 10 zonal committees, each under a union minister to oversee the working of the party under the respective areas.

The organisational management committee will be headed by Ganesh Shankar Pandey of Rae Bareli who is considered close to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Veteran Congressman Ram Krishna Dwivedi will head the disciplinary committee, while a three member panel comprising Siraj Mehdi, Satish Ajmani and Ram Kumar Bhargava have been entrusted with media affairs.

The task of publications and coordination between the Congress high command and the state unit would be looked after by a two-member panel comprising R.P. Tripathi and Tariq Naqvi.

The spokesman asserted that the new committees will not end up duplicating tasks.

"Digvijay Singh's idea behind setting up of these new committees is to assist the UPCC, that has the key task of handling the coming elections. There will be no duplication but these committees will only provide better coordination," he said.
