No Need for Assembly Resolution on Telangana: Advani

Hyderabad, Oct 19 (IANS): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Wednesday said there was no need for a resolution to be passed by the Andhra Pradesh assembly for carving out a separate Telangana state.

Addressing a news conference in Nizamabad during his 'Jana Chetna Yatra', he said there was no need for a resolution to be passed by any assembly for the formation of a new state.

"The constitution of India does not provide anything of that sort. There is no need for any assembly resolution," he said.

Blaming the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for uncertainty over the Telangana issue, the former deputy prime minister said the demand for Telangana state was 'justified'.

"In this particular case if only the government of India makes up its mind with the support of the principal opposition party, namely the BJP, there will be absolutely no difficulty in passing a bill for the formation of Telangana state in the winter session of parliament," he said reiterating that the BJP is ready to support the bill.

Advani predicted that a separate Telangana state would become a reality in 2012. While assuring the people of the region that the BJP would stand by them, he recalled that three new states were created during BJP rule.

The BJP leader criticised the UPA government for going back on its promise to carve out Telangana state. "Within 15 days of promising that they would be forming the state of Telangana, they went back upon the promise, with the result that this region today is in a condition that has not been witnessed in any other state for 60 years," he said.

"I have never known a strike of this magnitude and I have not seen in my life young men committing suicide because of the non-fulfilment of a political promise," said Advani while commenting on the ongoing 'people's strike' and suicides by youth and students in the region.

Advani, whose yatra entered Telangana from Maharashtra Tuesday evening, will address road shows in Nizamabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts before reaching Hyderabad to address a public meeting Wednesday evening.

Advani will not be visiting coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, where some groups opposed to bifurcation of the state burnt his effigies protesting his pro-Telangana statements.
