Udupi, Oct 21: Gold and silver ornaments worth lacs were reported stolen from 'Sriraj Jewellers' located in Parkala near Manipal was burgled on Thursday October 21 night. The incident came to light on Friday October 21 morning.

Thieves managed to break open the shutters of the jewellery store and decamped with 356 grams of gold and 3.25 kg of silver. The total worth of the stolen ornaments is estimated at Rs 9.50 lac, as per Manipal police.

Sriraj Jewellery is located on the main road of Parkala. The thieves got away with almost the entire stock of jewellery, it is said. The store, suprisingly, has no security alarm or CCTV, which has made investigation tougher for the police.

Moreover, though lockers are in place, the jewellery was not secured under lock and key, sources said. The shutter of the shop is said to be very old and this would have made the task easier for the thieves.

The residents of a house located adjacent to the store said that they did not hear anything and came to know of the incident only in the morning, when the store employees came for duty as raised an alarm.

Preliminary invsetigation revealed that the thieves dragged out trays on which the gold ornaments were displayed and emptied the contents into a gunny bag used to store sand. The trays were strewn all over the place.

Sources said that Manipal police station SI Kulakarni had advised store owner Raviraj Acharya to install alarm system and CCTVs six months ago. However, Acharya did not heed to the advice.

Udupi SP Dr Ravikumar and other senior police officers rushed to the spot. Investigations are on.

How can a jewellery store have no CCTV in this day and age when they know that the law and order situation is out of control and this spate of robberies have been going on for a while. It could be an inside job to claim insurance or just take off with the loot. A Serious jeweler will secure his gold in every way so as not get stolen..but this looks to suspicious.. definitely be a dead end case

Looting gold is a very lucrative business nowadays due to sky rocketing prices of gold, the evidence too can be destroyed in minutes. Many unscrupulous jewelers themselves are indirectly supporting these burglars by regularly buying gold from them at dirt cheap rates. Smart thieves know how to desensitize the CCTV cameras nowadays!!

Sky rocketing of gold price makes thieves to look for gold theft. As police strictly advised to the jewelry owners to install CCTV camera which was not headed by jeweler. Therefore the concerned Jeweler partially responsible to this heist besides store's shutter also not secured one. Jewelers are not learning lessons yet, makes difficult job for police department.
