Mangalore, Oct 24: Despite constantly pleading the concerned authorities to provide shelter (houses) for the homeless, their voices were unheard. Even though six long months have passed no arrangements of any kind were made for the benefit of the poor, bringing forth the ‘Inequality’ shown against the lesser-privileged.

Objecting this negligent attitude of the concerned people, a mammoth protest was organized by DYFI members in front of the MCC building here on Monday October 24.

Demanding an own home to lead a dignified life is a right as per the provisions of Indian constitution. But for poor people in the district, it still remains a dream said DYFI state vice-president Muneer Katipalla.

“Many protests, demonstrations, rallies carried out were unheard by the concerned authorities. Fertile lands belonging to farmers are going to the hands of industrialists and private companies. Government lands are not given to poor people, instead rich people are investing black money in the land. Though the district is wearing the ‘developmental look’ it is not fair to the underprivileged people, he opined.

Due to the uncommon hike in house rents,  poor people are not able to afford to rental house too. At the proposed Krishi Sammelan in December, more lands will be sold out to foreign investors.

Though the state Government had promised of 4,000 houses to each legislative constituency, it was not realised. Though projects like ‘Ashraya’, Rajiv Gandhi, Vajapayee Housing projects, Indira Awas were announced, poor are made to hear from the authorities that there is no land, he alleged.

Poor people in impressive numbers took out a rally from Besant College circle to MCC. Leaders of labour unions and farmer unions also took part in the protest. Later they submitted a memorandum to commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation. Police provided tight vigil and helped for the smooth flow of traffic.

This is in response to India is a rich country ruled by...
It's the same story in USA too, only the one percent of the richest hold the wealth of the nation. Our housing market is constantly declining and the economists predict a recession. New graduates between 25 and 32 have no jobs, have returned to their parents with a six figure college loans and US media calls these youngsters a lost generation. Bottom line is we are all suffering and the one percent is looting the rest. Thanks to globalization!

The poor farmers have been deprived of their fertile lands by the Govt despite there being a clear cut directive by the apex court to not acquire fertile land. and Govt. sponsored corporates with a pittance as remuneration. Most of them have squandered away the money on drinks and are on the roads as they have lost their source of income from cultivation. This side the prices of land and flats have gone through the roof due to the builder/underworld cartel/mafia without any justifiable reason.

The poor have no choice but to put up illegal shanties around the city. There is no doubt that those who own ancestral land in and around the city are sitting on a huge mound of money. It is funeral of the poor and the downtrodden what with the prices of even every day commodities soaring to sky high levels!! God save us.....

At a time when speaking for poor is not fashionable, people like Munir are one of such rare breeds of leaders who are guided by the courage of their convictions. If not for the left parties, our governments would have gone ahead in full steam with the liberalization. Had it not been for the left parties we would have been another Turkey or Mexico.
