Mangalore: Power Supply Woes Harass People During Deepavali

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 27: During Deepavali, people like to decorate their houses with colourful lights and lamps, as it happens to be a festival of lights. Lighting of earthen lamps, although in vogue even now, is not very popular as strong winds tend to extinguish the flame. This time however, scores of people had to celebrate Deepavali in darkness.

Power supply woes were witnessed all over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, electricity supply was restored to most part of the coast. In cities, generators installed by apartments were seen roaring through out the night on Tuesday.

Often, power supply gets cut the moment lightning appears. The supply resumes some time later, but goes off again when the next lightning appears. On several occasions, it takes several hours to resume power supply.

Mescom officials say that technical problems which occur in power lines due to lightning, has been the root cause for the problem. They said that a problem had arisen after a breaker of 220 kv in Kemar was burnt down due to lightning on Tuesday evening due to lightning. After repairs were conducted, Udupi district got power by 10 pm, while some parts of Dakshina Kannada district received power supply by 12 am. They said that all concerned repairs were completed by Wednesday evening.

Dear Charles Dmello, why are these power failures occuring at regular intervals. Why do we have to suffer after paying exorbitant bills for the facility and also sky high real estate prices without secured basic amenities?

I agree with the comments of Sandesh Shetty. There was power cut on tuesday for hours together. It was due to frequent lighting and thundering. There is nothing to blame electricity or our govt for this because if something goes who is responsible for that. Also if something goes wrong due to that then some of our commentators will again blame BJP state govt for that.

It is unfortunate that 220 KV breaker was damaged due to lightning strike...no point in blaming ministers or the power supply companies... these thing happen and when these unfortunate things happen keep your mouth shut...don't blame government for that..!!!??? Any way Deepavali does not depend on Lights which are connected to power..Oil lamps will definitely help..!

Jossey Saldanha, Mangalore/Mapusa/Mumbai heard that there was power cut in Goa during diwali. So why are you poking your nose into karnataka. Try to resolve the power problem of goa first. The BJP govt is not ruling your secular kangress govt is ruling.

The congress ruled for nearly 50 years in the state and they failed to solve power problem. Now the people are expecting miracle to take during BJP state govt rule at one shot. I am in Mangalore during diwali vacation and i dont think so there is that much power problem as expected. Yes on tuesday there was power cut for some hours together. The reason being there was frequent lighting and tundering. I remember those days when congress was ruling our state there was frequent power cuts morning 2 hours and also evening 2 hours load shedding. Also in between there was so many unlimited power cuts. Campare to that now the power problem is much better.

So much for the hype created for our city Mangluru and the rigging of land and flat prices by the builder cartel/land mafia, we still do not have basic amenities in place like municipal water supply, proper drainage, electricity, public transport, communal harmony to name a few!!!!
