Mangalore, Oct 30, DHNS: Let no misconceptions prevail with regard to the Mangalore Airport as it is a ‘DGCA Licensed’ airport, the runway has been constructed with the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) norms inclusive of RESA (Runway End Safety Area) and it is eligible to be declared as an International Airport, said Union Minister of Corporate Affairs Dr M Veerappa Moily.

He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day workshop on ‘Table top airports and safety aspects’ organised by National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) and Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee.

The present runway is 8000 ft and 205 acres of land is provided by the state government for extension of the runway. The runway needs to be extended to 9500 ft, said Moily. The total estimated cost for the extension of runway, construction of part parallel taxiway and link taxiway is Rs 51 crores and the proposal is likely to put up to AAI board for approval, he said.

The administrative approval and expenditure sanction for construction of new control tower cum technical block at Mangalore Airport for an amount of Rs 26.57 crores has been obtained.

The new air traffic control tower is under construction and will be ready in 18 months, he said and added that there are plans to convert the old terminal building for international and domestic cargo operation.

Speaking on the aviation industry today, he said that it is growing steadily and bears a strong correlation with the overall economic growth. The industry has been accounted for approximately 1.7 per cent of world GDP with over 1.1 trillion USD in turnover. Approximately 25 per cent of the value trade in manufactured goods is being transported by air. The air freight has increased by 65 per cent in 10 years and domestic fights has grown faster that the international flights in last five years, he said.

Airports Authority of India, Southern Region, Regional Executive Director D Devaraj said that Mangalore Airport can handle Airbus 320 type of aircraft at present. AAI always pays more attention to safety. Every airport will have an annual study, surveillance study and technical study, he said.

Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva said that there are several misconceptions about the airport after the crash. “There is absolutely no problem in the airport. There is no need to fear unnecessarily. All misconceptions can be dispelled,” he stressed.

NITK Director Professor Sandeep Sancheti said very few cities can boast of all modes of transport such as air, water, rail and road and Mangalore is one of them. Many of the places which house IITs have an airport as this plays an important role, he said.

NMPT Deputy Director T S N Murthy said there is a need to remove the fear of air travel. As many as 30,000 airplanes have touched the Mangalore runway, he said.

T think Mr Moily has forgot that its a table top airport.....Not even the normal length would be enough in such a case because its too risky...Action should be taken as soon as possible and the runway should be extended....

I booked an air ticket in AIE for Muscat-Mangalore sector for this forthcoming Eid. It costed me RO98/-. My friend booked the ticket in AIE for the same date to Muscat-Cochin sector for RO68/-!!!!!

AIE is really doing injustice to Mangaloreans because there is monopoly. Come on friends, let us put pressure on our leaders to bring in other air lines to Mangalore. God bless you all.

Even after such a major air crash at Mangalore airport more than a year ago, it is surprising that approvals are yet to be obtained for a measly 51 crores. For siphoning off millions of dollars through CWG, 3G, Mining and other scams no approvals are required. It is quite clear how concerned our politicians and bureaucrats are with regards to providing basic safety measures for the general public.

Mr. Moily does not have misconceptions because I don’t think he lands in M’lore on AIE Boeing 737-800 flights.

""there are plans to convert the old terminal building for international and domestic cargo operation"". Wow What a joke!!!! Four years on now we hear now & then this pre-recorded message from our leaders (so called politicial heavy weights) Our Leaders Must be sent to Kerala for the purpose of training them in the sense that how a tiny state grabbed FOUR Int'l Standard Airports ? No 2nd Intl Airport to Much bigger state Like Karnataka yet. But our Leaders are sick & only trying to fool people around by giving wordly promises, they are no where and mute spectators when compared to Ministers from Kerala in the Federal cabinet.

Shiva you are right this question raised by many in the past, I do blame the team / Government for not planning to have 9500 feet run way in the begining itself. They had a plan to make money in two shifts and also they can run only their city bus taxi ( Air India express ) loot the local passengers. If they make 9500 feet run way all other international Airlines will operate their flyght how this sick Air India express can loot the passemngers? Other issue is that Pvt. Air lines operating Via Bomaby will not have much revenue.

All our Ministers are in having hand in glows with Pvt. Airlines. Our Ministers like Veerappa Moily, Mallikarjun Kharge, SM Krishna, Muniyappa etc.. does not have enough hold in central government to bring required facilities our state. Elected representatives like Oscar fernandes, Janardhana poojary, Vinaya Kumar sorake, Nalen Kumar Kateel, I.M.Jayaram Shetty, Dananjaya Kumar not done much to DK.Udupi. The only person who helped to DK and Udupi is Goerge Fernandees by bringing Konkan Railway. Hats off to him.

Dear Ministers, AAI, Vasudev, If : “There is absolutely no problem in the airport" why the permission for other aircrafts to land here are denied ?? Why the airport runway was not extended before to make it 10000 ft? Is MRPL was given more importance in acquiring land than for the Airport?? We have a International Standard Airport since....years and only one airline lands here?? Is it True...friends you think...!! Are we serving the community or ....political motive ?? Please justify reasons

Instead of 8000ft new runway, a 9500ft runway could have paved at the begining itself before inaugrating the new airport! Why this 1500ft was left out? Was it not in airport authority knowledge that 9500ft runway is required for an International Airport?

Respected Sirs, please extend the Runway without any more delay. Because from years only assurance and meetings only. We want other more airlines to land at Mangalroe. Air India Express started as budget airline. Now from middle east its more expenssive than USA & UK tickets. Kindly look into this matter too. God bless Mangalore Airport.
