Mangalore: Current Flow in TV Cable Kills Teenager

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (VA)

Mangalore, Oct 31: While fixing back the TV cable which was disconnected  because of heavy thunder and lighting the previous night to avoid any harm, a boy lost his life on the spot on Sunday October 30.

Akshay (17), a student, touched the wire when current was passing through it, it is said. Akshay was the son of farmer Soorya Shetty and Bharathi residing at Tekkatte region.

On Saturday night due to powerful thunder and lightning the electricity supply was completely disrupted. Akshay’s sister tried saving him, but in vain.

Akshay had completed his school education at Tekkatte Seva Sangama Vidya Kendra and was pursuing his college studies from Kota Viveka pre-university College. He was a bright and soft mannered student and was liked by all at college.

Akshay was unable to watch the match between India and England on Saturday night as there was no power. He went to fix the cable in order to watch the match highlights, without any idea that it would cost him his life.

Akshay is survived by grand-father, father, mother and two sisters.

Our Mangluru is really highly deficient in infrastructure and safety! Such type of accidents are common in DK, but very rare in metros like Mumbai, come thunder or lightning or floods....so much for this so called hyped city!!!!!

Very very sad and unfortunate news.May his soul rest in peace.Even if we unplug the cable there could be a possibility of current. During thunders and lighting simply unplugging of cable is not safe instead fuse should be removed.TV and it's cable one of the main vehicle which carries power during thunders and lighting even if it is unplugged. But here once again confusion persists because the plug was removed previous night!then how this incident happened god knows.

A precious life has been lost due to the gross negligence of Mescom and cable TV operators. RIP Akshay!! Cable TV wires are fixed precariously to the electric poles giving high chance of HV getting connected to the TV cables. Moreover the wires are not even bound but haphazardly tied up. Just now, I myself saw here in Lalbagh a Mescom contract worker climb up a electric pole make a fresh joint for a tube light connection, he just twisted the newly aluminium wire and left it bare without applying even a single layer of insulating tape!! This is the way our Mangluru is developing taking for granted precious human lives.....Jai Ho!!!

Mr. Frederick Pinto, Shirva is right. Reader please note. Sometime electrician also give Dish TV line ( not cable tv LIne) in electric socet (board) , is not correct. Need to keep separate socet for dish line.

Very sad news. May his soul rest in peace. I thing this is happend because of cable tv line and elecric line is very close then the high voltage spike can jump to power line and cable line. This can happen vice versa. So better to keep maximum distance between cable line and electric line, so that one line cannot effect another line. Electrical wires no closer than one foot from each other. Also telephine wire dont put them in the same conduit.

    Ashok & Elveera,
According to report the cable was disconnected previous night due to the fear of thunder & lightning harming the TV, and in the meantime electricity also went off in the night itself.Somewhere somehow live electric wire has come into contact with tv cable which nobody will guess?. Unknowingly the boy touched the cable( electricity flowing) and got electrocuted. The blame should be put on the authorities who with or without knowledge have not rectified the problem. It can happen to anybody??.

I am really saddened by this tragic incident. Now we should look for ways to prevent these from happening in the future. Under prevailing conditions of outages, power cuts due to natural calamities like lightening etc., the MESCOM, City Corporation or any other competent authority should issue some guidelines or "dos" and "don'ts" to be followed to the general public.

Very sad indeed! My heart and sympathies go to the family of Akshay, who will find hard to bear the loss of this young man. Besides the road and traffic accidents, and also the water related drownings due to inability to swim etc., this is the another area (electrical short circuits and live wires) that one needs to be very careful, viz. handling the electrically run home appliances and gadgets.

This is sad news.. May god give strength to his family. The cable company needs to take precaution. a simple circuit can prevent higher voltage from passing through the cable and should be used at every household. Moreover instead of metal threads silicon or plastic threads can be used to connect cable to the tv end ir set top box.

Sorry to hear this news. Through out our two districts, TV cables are fixed on electric poles. Are they really safe? Is there any mechanism for the safety? Hope the MESCOM engineers will give clarification.
