Mangalore, Nov 2: “Nurses can really make a difference and their role is much more than the doctors. They take care of patience by being on their side till they are recovered and discharged from the hospital”, pointed out Dr BM Hegde, former vice- chancellor, Manipal University.

He spoke after inaugurating the two-day international conference, INCON-2011 on ‘Translational Research – Nurses making a difference’ at the FMMC Decennial Memorial Hall here on Wednesday November 2.

Elaborating further, Dr Hegde said that ‘health care’ turning into ‘disease care’ is a menace to the human society. To be able to treat patients through human approach nursing profession is the best one. Placebo effect really works, provided once the patient gains faith on treatment, he opined.

Syllabus tells one what to study, but one should be aware what he or she really wants to do in life. Nurses should always be with patients as doctors have less time to deal with them. He also added that research work could be taken up soon after the degree education.

Dr K Reddamma, nodal officer, Phd Consortium, NIMHANS, Bangalore said that whenever research is taken up in the nursing field, studies should emphasize on how well difference in life of common people are achieved.

Dr Anice George, dean, Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal said that junior nurses should spend time with senior nurses to inculcate the acute values of the profession. The core of nursing profession is care. Interaction with delegates in these kinds of conferences helps to gain knowledge and that should be put into action, she advised.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, FMCI in his presidential address at the inaugural session said that research in the nursing profession helps to bring expertise from bench to the bed side. A nurse is always closer to patient than doctor, nurse observes the patient carefully and watches the progress patients make, he said.

Professor Favrod Jerome, RN, CNS, university of applied sciences of western Switzerland, was also the guest of honour on the occasion. Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator welcomed. Bridget D’Silva delivered the vote of thanks. Valedictory programme of Incon will be held on Thursday November 3.

I am a FMCI trained nurse working in the UK.I see a lot of difference working as a nurse in India as well as in the UK.Here in the UK doctors are challenged by the nurses ...well which is a right thing to do ''Always act in the best interest of the patient and be a advocate to the patients in your care...as the registration body has a clear written professional code of conduct every nurse has to abide and work in the best interest of the patient and not being the slave of a doctor as we see this happening on a regular basis in India. Doctors need to do their job and not treat the Nurses as their slaves.

To Avil, Bangalore-I think you are trying to make a very good point here about nurses needs, pay structure and working conditions but why are we still expecting the doctors to take care of all that?

Each hospital has a Nursing Superintendent, its the responsibility of him/her to make changes in nursing. Its the responsibility of the schools/colleges of nursing to instill that confidence in nurses. Why are we still going behind doctors???Why the head of nursing dept still do not have a voice in nursing aspects? Is this not something that we created for ourselves as nurses?

It is a female dominated profession but why do we still want a male (eg doctor) to lead us? All of us need to question ourselves.

I have been in profession for more than 20 years as a nurse and a lecturer within in India and abroad and it is painful to see experienced Indian nurses still 'following the instructions' from a recently qualified MBBS doctor without questioning. This doesnt happen in Ireland or in West where I currently work. The director of nursing here has a budget and authority to use it in improving the status of nursing. We need to see that happen in India.

Common man doesnt realise the pain a nurse goes through when he/she is cared by a nurse yet there are several incidents we feel ashamed to call ourselves as nurses becoz of few incidents that happen once in a while.

I wish these conferences are not just speeches by few known people but becomes a way forward for nurses.

WHY ALL DOCTORS ARE COMMENTING UPON NURSES STRIKE.. R THEY FEARED..??? NURSES ALSO ARE HUMANS... THEY ARE ALSO HAVE HUNGER , THIRST AND NEED REST... IF THEY GOT A GOOD ATMOSPHERE FOR WORKING IN HOSPITALS AND A GOOD SALARY THEY WILL NEVER GO FOR A STRIKE.. STILL THE DOCTORS WANT THE NURSES AS THERE SLAVES.. ALL FOREIGN COUNTRIES GIVE RESPECT TO NURSES AND GAVE A GOOD PAY THEN WHY INDIAN HOSPITALS ARE NOT GIVING THEM A DECENT PAY..

MR B SAYS not even a single hospital in india is not maintaining a proper nurse-patient ratio. it must be maintained at least by super specialty hospitals& med. colleges.

most of the hospitals are asking the nurses 2 take care of 15 or 20 patients at a time
what s the the nurse-pt ratio recommended by govt?

2 nurses for 50 patients,,, how can nurses manage this.. for a basic salary more than "KOOLI" workers...

and if nurses show agaitation or speak about strike the responses of doctors are??

"One of the fundamental ethics of the profession says nurses shouldn't participate in agitations as that affects the service rendered to patients," said Dr S S Prabhudeva, vice-president, Trained Nurses Association of India

Doctors in Bangalore said a strike will affect the prospects of Indian nurses obtaining visas to work in West Asia as the region doesn't permit agitations. Strikes are also prohibited under Essential Services Maintenance Act (Esma

Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya said: "Most of the Indian nurses prefer going to the UAE or countries in West Asia after working for one or two years in hospitals here. There are 6 lakh nurses from Kerala working in West Asia. If there are frequent agitations, there are chances these nurses may lose the opportunity to work abroad."
I WANT TO KNOW WHY DOCTORS DONT WANT NURSES TO GO ABROAD???
WHY THEY ARE NOT READY TO MAKE A CHANGE IN NURSING??
WHY THEY SCARE THE NURSES FROM FLYING ABROAD??WHY

Nursing is dominated by doctors... My question is why it is so?? are there any shortage of nurses for the higher post???here are some of quotes for TNAI(TRAINED NURSES ASSOCIATION OF INDIA)AND ALSO abuses felt by nurses towards by this profession.

MR X i m really depressed about the outcomes of our mumbai strike. our demands are not met & most of the people have a perception that strike was a success. was it really? i dont think so. anybody has seen the experience certificate they provided? they cheated all of us(all the nurses)
but i m more depressed only because our spirits 4 the strike is settled down.
    something has 2 be done....

Last week, 250-odd nurses of Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai, went on strike after a colleague, Beena Baby, allegedly committed suicide on October 18. They were protesting against a two-year bond that allows the hospit...al to retain their original certificates. The certificates are released only after the bond expires or after payment of Rs 50,000

MR Y the problem starts from the date of joinong for nursing. from that day onwards all will talk to us regarding respect to seniors , teachers, threatening regarding internal marks. when we comes outof the college after 4 years the mind will be full with don'ts.......finally will be a most obedient servant who can be scolded by docters, nsg supd, senoirs, patients and even sweepers or grade 4 workers................. SO BREAK THE RULES................

Nurses can make a difference provided with support, increase in salary, that respect and proper status for nursing, raise in salary..nothing change has happen in this doctors dominated hospital.. we can see lot of abuse in hospital for nurses which are not highlighted because of job insecurity..wats gonna happened if they pay 25000rs per month... wat u get 2500rs in 21st century.. there is no support from Nursing council for nurses. I am a nurse and i can understand . if anyone speak and show in anger for any institution they are targeted...
