Lucknow, Nov 15 (IANS): Vehemently refuting the charges levelled by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi against her government as "a pack of lies", Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati late Monday evening blasted him.

"Whatever Rahul Gandhi has said earlier during the day was a pack of lies, politically motivated only with the intent of running down our government," ruling Bahujan Samaj Party spokesman Swami Prasad Maurya said in a statement issued here.

"Our chief minister wants the central government to clarify what the central government had done for the development of Uttar Pradesh," the statement asked.

Mayawati has also taken serious note of Rahul's remark about Uttar Pradesh youth "going abegging" in states like Maharashtra and Punjab. "What does Rahul mean by calling the UP youth beggars; he ought to realise that if someone goes from one part of the country to another in search of employment, he does not become a beggar; they are hard working people", points the statement issued on behalf of the chief minister.

Throwing the ball back at the Congress leader who had charged her government of rampant corruption, the statement also hit out at the Congress for "setting new landmarks in corruption". It went on to add, "as far as the BSP government is concerned, perhaps it was the only state government in the country that has ordered action against its own ministers, MPS and MLAs as soon as any complaint is received about serious charges of corruption or any unlawful act against them", the statement claimed.

Refuting Rahul's charge about Mayawati's "neglect of Bundelkhand", the statement claimed that the chief minister had been visiting the backward region quite regularly.

Rahul Gandhi had attacked the BSP government in a speech at a public rally in Phulpur earlier in the day.
