Udupi, Nov 19: A meeting of the officials of Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), the administration and the villagers here at the deputy commissioner's office on November 19 witnessed heated arguments and tense moments and police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.

Villagers came in huge numbers to raise their concerns against the UPCL project, saying the project causes threat to health and aquatic life and expressed concerns over its effect on the environment.

The meeting was led by an expert committee comprising Y B Ramakrishna, C V Ramachandra, environmental officer, C D Kumar, A Ganesh, D Balachandra, Dr Subhash Chandra and Dr Jaidev Bhat. After hearing the pleas from the villagers, the committee promised to visit the place again and decided to verify the entire issue and produce the same brfore the government within 45 days. They assured to call a general meeting soon after the examination is over.

As many as 500 people from 8 villages were present at the meeting; and each one raised agitation against the project. The meeting turned into a heated debate when some among the villagers argued in favour of the project, and police had to intervene.

UPCL, formerly known as Nagarjuna Power Corporation Limited (NPCL) has been facing protests and agitation ever since its inception. The agitations pertain to the ingress of sea water used for cooling the UPCL power plant into the agricultural land allegedly leading to contamination of the drinking water in wells and damage to tin sheet roofs due to the saline water vapours from cooling towers. Local people expressed their fears on emission of additional smoke, fly ash and fishery related problems.

When villagers protested against the flow of saline water containing coal dust and chemicles, Sudarshan, an official from UPCL, assured the people that the problem would be rectified at the earliest. Assistant commissioner B Sadashiv Prabhu said that corrective measures would be taken within 10 days.

"During the visit by the experts team, we also expressed our apprehension about the damage being caused by the saline water that gets ejected from the cooling tower, but nothing was done," said a villager. They also claimed compensation for the losses.

DC MJ Reju, ADC Kumar, tahsildar Prasanna and Balakrishnan, president, Nandikur Jana Jagrathi Samiti were present at the meeting. Villagers from Yellur, Palimar, Nandikur, Mudarangadi, Thenka-Bada Hejamady, Inna and surrounding places were present.

The villagers complained against holding the meeting in DC's office. "Not everyone could make it to the meeting as it was held far from the village," they said, and grieved that the project did not yield even little profit for them and all the villagers were affected.

according to my calculation this has been made to make money with this project, instead of bnefit for the people, as par as i know there are many coal based power plants, but there will be enough / good measures will be taken to protect people & envioronment..! so here push the officials to make the proper arrangements for sea water disposal & ash dumping.

People are concerned about their own health and welfare and I guess that is fare enough....but all people should remember that 85% of power in the state is generated from coal fired power plants which use coal of quality that is at least 4 times worst.........In other words people of padubidri enjoy electricity at the cost of someone else's health and welfare........if there is no power for even 5 minutes we people crib saying "che pondu maraya current nana yepa barpunda" Life bcomes miserable without electricity...........but remember that electricity is generated else where and that too 85% of it is from coal.........now how fare is this that u benifit and other poor people somewhere in Raichur suffer for your comforts.......

Not everyone could make it to the meeting as it was held far from the village," they said, and grieved that the project did not yield even little profit for them and all the villagers were affected."
The reason behind the meeting was scheduled at a distant location is that the villagers should not make it to the meeting so that there wont be anyone to tell their griefs and the management could leave without trial over the UPCL.
Its not the fault of ministers or politicians because they are not concerned for anyone other than themselves. we people are idiots who and elect them during the time of election.
What money those ministers give to people during the time of election in return for votes they try getting it back after winning election afterall who would wish to bear loss of crores of rupees.
Sincere people who stay for election are either no elected or they are being highlited by the media and later criticized for some petty issues which the opposite party shows them.

Another day, another round of protest by anti-development professional protesters like Vijay Kumar Hegde (who lives in Udupi city), Vidya Dinakar (who lives in Mangalore and roams around the world attending seminars in exotic locations in the name of human rights/environment)

Villagers are being taken for a ride by Dubai based gas mafia and professional fake-environment activists.

Whole state is already facing power shortage just after monsoon.

Every court in this land has rejected arguments of these professional anti-development fake environment activists.

Government is trying to genuinely address real grievances here and same old Balakrishna Shetty (who flies in from Dubai), Vijay Kumar Hegde and Vidya Dinakar create scenes in these meetings. They hog the limelight while real villagers don't get a chance to state their problems.

Photos of these ruckus and links to these reports are then sent to International NGOs who promptly send even more euros and dollars to fund these "environmental activists". And the cycle continues!

All irregularities in the implemantation of this project be probed seriously, even the project has no licence from any Panchayats.
The Govt. which is hell bent upon having this project is trying to blackmail people saying there is power shortage in the state

Well done dear villagers. For poor people nobody cares except during election time. Like prostitute the politicians will beg for votes and after the election they will forget the electorates. This is the true colour of our politicians.

If UPCL not bother to rectify the problem then just put bomb on UPCL Plant atleast few lives could be saved before UPCL leads to more deaths. There is no other alternative for India like countries because elected representatives busy in making more wealth for themselves (for their Khandaan).

The meeting between UPCL and surrounding villagers tend to be hot and tense because it is mater of do or die for them.If villagers can't drink clean water, breathe healthy air then certainly it is a serious matter of health. If UPCL not concerned the minimum environmental compliance then I am afraid it could trigger more unrest by the villagers.

Why we are electing our representatives? Where are they? Why District in charge Minister mum?Why Udupi Zilla Parsishath President prefer to remain untraceable when people are boiling to get their basic rights.More interestingly DVS,CM of Karnataka, being MP of that area besides CM, why can't solve this basic problem of his area?
