Udupi, Nov 22: In a tragic incident that occurred in a house located in the neighbourhood of Kukkikatte Muchlakodu temple here on the evening of Monday November 21, two workers , who had got down into a well to work, suffocated to death.

They have been identified as Soorya (27), son of Govindan, and Saravanan (25), son of Amaravathi, from Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. Soorya was put up near Uttaradimutt here, while Saravananan resided in a house in Nittoor near here.

It is gathered that an engineer named Sathish used a diesel pumpset to  drain out water in the well to facilitate work. Reportedly, the diesel in the pump dried out. Soorya went in with a can of diesel in hand for fuelling the pump. As the pump was running without diesel, thick smoke emanated from there, creating a suffocating atmosphere. Due to thick smoke, both the labourers collapsed in the well and suffocated to death, said fire brigade officials who visited the spot later.

The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and brought out the bodies after prolonged efforts. The bodies have been preserved in the mortuary at Ajjarkad hospital here.  A case was   registered in this regard at town police station.
