Mangalore, Nov 26: "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader, it is said. It is not just paper, words, or collection of sentences that is found in the books. It could be a solution to a problem, recalling of history, events and different vistas of life," said Fr Joseph Martis at the inaugural of ‘Festival of Books-2011’ by Pauline Publications and Communications that opened here at Milagres Church Compound on Saturday November 26.

"Books help to read, discover and find out new things. ‘Reading is a discount ticket for everything’" quoted Fr Martis, Rector of Jeppu Seminary. "If we want to go to Paris, Rome or to any corner in the world, books are the cheapest way as they explain everything about the city for a very little price," he added.

"‘House without books is house without windows’. Books diffuse knowledge in all walks of life. Buying books is definitely not a loss as they are our companions everywhere. They gives fresh ideas, wisdom, humour and recreation," said Fr Martis in his presidential address.

"Reading is nothing spectacular but infuses the reader with knowledge and wisdom. Books have not lost its value despite the rapid growth of the electronic media," said Sr Mariate, Provincial of Sisters of Little Flower. Stephen Mendis, chairman, Western Institute of Technology, lauded the efforts by the sisters in contributing knowledge to the society.

The exhibition-cum-sale is organized by the Sisters of St Paul Congregation, every year. This year it is especially dedicated to commemorate the 40th death anniversary of James Alberione, the founder of the order, and also to bring awareness among the people on reading books, said Sr Nancy. Fr Gomes, Principal of Milagres College was present at the inaugural.

The ‘Festival of Books’ which will be open till December 4 includes all kinds of books on exhibition and sale with up to 40% discount.
