Mangalore, Nov 27: District-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar promised quick enactment of a law to protect and develop the condition of the ponds in the state. He was speaking after initiating work on construction of an 8.37 acre pond in Kavoor area in the city.

"This work is being taken up by the small irrigation department under the CM's ponds renovation programme of 2011-12 at the cost of Rs 1 crore. In all, 122 ponds in the DK district and 10 ponds in City Corporation limits will be developed," he said.

“The department has begun work in Kavoor and Karinjeshwar to develop the ponds. The development consists of removing silt to reinforce the weak borders and barricades as well as big granite stones put up for the revetment. In the monsoon season, the plan is to build a 600m pipeline to provide for the smooth flow of water to ponds from different small valleys. A 49.80m long stop-wall will also be set up,” informed Palemar.

“In the rush to carry out road and infrastructure work, ponds are often neglected. For proper implementation of the act, the support of the local people is important,” he said.

More than the pond renovation act, an awareness of water conservation should be created among the people. The inspection and verification of ponds in the city has already been done and a message has been sent to the concerned authorities to get rid of the unwanted construction,” he said.

“The construction of ponds helps agricultural purposes and fisheries. The government will staunchly support this cause,” added Palemar.

Mayor Praveen and corporators Deepak Poojary, Harinath, Venkatesh, and Madhukiran were present on the occasion.

Then, the minister visited Neermarga, Manoor, Kel Rai Cross, Bondathila, Adyar Padav and surrounding areas to verify the road construction work in Neermarga, Manoor, Kelrai Cross, Bondathila and Adyar Padau. On the occasion he laid the foundation stone for a barricade costing Rs 10 lac which will be constructed near Manoor Anantha Padmanabha temple.

Looks like someone is trying to take the soil from this pond to transform their land or use for the landfill at the expense of the state.

Hopefully Mr.Palemar will take a cue from the Pai's of Manipal in devloping the pond, Just have a look at the well maintained park at End Point and the manupalla at Manipal. They are really well maintained, I am sure govt and public admisntration cannot do a good job as the private orhanisation.
