Mangalore: Outlook Magazine Tenders Apology for Defaming Bishop

Media Release

Mangalore, Dec 10: Popular English weekly Outlook has tendered an apology for publishing a defamatory letter against Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore in its October 10 issue.

“We sincerely apologize to the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese and to the members of the Catholic community for the oversight and regret the inconveniences caused,” wrote Outlook editor-in-chief Vinod Mehta in a clarification published in the latest issue.

The weekly, without verifying its contents, had published the controversial letter written by one Joe A Lewis which stated that ”a recent raid by the Enforcement Directorate on a bishop in Mangalore resulted in the seizure of Rs 9 crore.”

The letter had also urged the magazine to get the matter investigated.

The weekly, following investigation, wrote that “we are happy to clarify that there was no such raid by the Enforcement Directorate on the bishop of Mangalore and nothing was seized.”

Mehta said he is contemplating legal proceedings against the letter writer for the “false, baseless and ill-motivated allegation”.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza called it “a victory of the prevailing truth against those who intend to maliciously defame the goodness of the Church. God is with us.”

Melwyn P Noronha, president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Mangalore and who headed the legal proceedings, said “the national weekly has investigated into the issue and put an end to the baseless rumors of a few biased individual anti-Christians.”

This incident gives a "Crystal Clear" message to the peolpe of "South Canara" that anything is possible!!! to defame some one's Name or say Image at any given point of time.
"Outlook" - such a "Wonderful Magazine" should have cross-checked the antecedents of the concerned person who wanted to bring down the respect and moral of Catholic Community.
Anyway better late than never, the magazine has cleared the (air)wrong doing and asked for forgiveness.
Bishop A.P. D'souza would not certainly drag the matter further by "JUST-FORGIVING" and close the Issue and giving a clear message to the "Media" to be "RESPONSIBLE" before "Publishing such Unwarranted" self created stories/issues by the so called anti social elements in society.

It is easy to hurt peoples feelings and say sorry. Experienced Journalist like Vinod Metha should't have published such an article(letter) without proper verification. It shows Metha is spreading false information to jack up readership. Metha is already in soup with NDTV and Tata Sons Ltd..I hope our Bishop who is good in heart won't file defamation complaint against Metha.

A report like this should never have appeared in the Press. The apology from the people responsible for this cheap public statement is totally inadequate. Here is a case for defamation. Our Bishop - no doubt has graciously made a statement. However I would state reports like these should be sent to the dustbins where they belong to.

There was a case when some individual confronted our earlier Bishop Basil D'Souza stating that people have been talking about his having eighty lacs staked under his mattress. Bishop Basil of sacred memory did not contradict the statement but requested the individual to accompany to his bedroom and showed him his bed which was devoid of a mattress and simply explained that he never used a mattress and hence there was no question of stacking eighty lacs under a mattress.

Despite all thee malicious statements The Catholic Community in Mangalore under the leadership of Our Bishop will lead ahead despite all hurdles.

Constitution of India has guaranteed fundamental rights of an individual. Many times these are misused by individuals/press.Disgruntled elements often carry hatred. But Outlook should have tested the veracity of the statement before publication.Catholic community always stood for truth, peace, harmony and justice. No one has business to condemn the Head of the powerful cathlolic community.
Outlook has hurt the sentiments of the Catholic community not only in Mangalore but all over the world. Truth has now prevailed.

Outlook has degraded itself by publishing readers letter without verifying the facts. It is really sad that newsmegazines stoop so low. The letter contains serious allegations. Even the Editor is contemplating legal action against the writer of the letter. We should not be satisfied with merely apology. The diocese must issue a stern warning and also ask for compensation in the form of sacrifice preferably asking Outlook to contribute for building a hostel for the youth(students). It will be right punishment for the atonement of the sin committed by the Outlook.

I do believe in forgiving one another, but a news publication
    publishing rootless news without
    checking the reality and truth
about it, must be taken to the court of law for
    defaming a well-known personality
like the Bishop so that this
    publication will not dare to
    slap on another personality for
the fun of defaming in the future.
They need to learn a lesson about
    responsible journalism.

Timely apologies and clarification results in positive attitude of the news magazine but they must investigate why this happend and without proer investigation how did they publish this news. Bottom line is publisher are responsible for this act and should be punished or sued for compensations.Publish only true stories and not false one.

A magazine of national stature should not have published this letter without verification. Nowadays, all media is after 'rating' for cheap publicity.
Is this going to be covered under so called 'self restraint' and 'self censorship' by concerned media? or will there be discipline in this fourth estate.

Just an apology won’t suffice when the good name of the Bishop and the Diocese has been maligned. The editor just can’t brush aside the incident that they have committed an error in publishing it. They are responsible to verify the facts before publishing them. It’s just not enough to apologize, here both editor and the write are equally responsible for the crime they committed by bringing baseless allegations and slandering someone’s reputation especially of the Bishop of the Diocese.

Who is this Joe A. Lewis? I don't understand why he want to defame the Bishop. He booked a place for himself in he'll. There are many from catholic faith want to defame priests n Bishop if their selfish motives are not fulfilled. I have gone through such incidents in my own parish n neighboring parish. May God forgive them.
