Panaji, Jan 13: Former Goa minister Ashok Salgaonkar passed away on Sunday at a private hospital in Mapusa, where he had been undergoing treatment. He was 81.

Salgaonkar, who initially ran a bus service, ventured into politics with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). He was first elected as MLA from the Siolim constituency in 1984 and was re-elected in 1989, also representing MGP.

Later, he joined the Congress Party along with Ponda MLA Ravi Naik. Despite multiple attempts, Salgaonkar faced setbacks in elections, running as both a Congress candidate and an independent, without success.

As a cabinet minister, Salgaonkar held key portfolios in transport and industries, contributing to Goa's development.

He is survived by his wife, son, and three daughters. His last rites were attended by senior Congress leaders, who paid tribute to his legacy.
