New Delhi, Jan 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the ambitious 'Mission Mausam' on the occasion of the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, January 16. The event will be held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital.
Aiming to transform India into a weather-ready and climate-smart nation, the initiative will focus on developing state-of-the-art weather surveillance technologies, including high-resolution atmospheric observations, next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computing systems.
Vision for climate resilience
The Prime Minister will also release the 'IMD Vision-2047' document, which outlines a roadmap for weather forecasting, climate change mitigation, and weather resilience. The document is designed to strengthen India's adaptation to climate change and improve preparedness for extreme weather events.
Ambitious initiative for a weather-secure future
Mission Mausam, approved by the union cabinet in September 2024, is backed by an investment of Rs 2,000 cr over two years. It will be implemented by IMD, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.
The programme promises to deliver significant benefits to various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, defence, aviation, water resources, and energy. It will also facilitate data-driven decision-making in urban planning, transport, offshore operations, and environmental monitoring.
IMD’s legacy of 150 Years
In commemoration of its 150th Foundation Day, IMD has organised a series of events, workshops, and activities to highlight its contributions over the decades. These initiatives aim to celebrate its pivotal role in making India climate-resilient and showcase its advancements in weather and climate services.
With Mission Mausam, India takes a giant leap toward becoming a leader in weather and climate-related science, ensuring a safer and more sustainable future for its citizens.
