Mumbai, Jan 24: A 20-year-old woman from Nalasopara was found injured at a Mumbai railway station late Tuesday, claiming she was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver. However, police investigations suggest a deeper and more complex story.

The woman was discovered with stones and a surgical blade wrapped in plastic inserted into her body. While the accused auto driver has been arrested and charged with rape, preliminary inquiries indicate the woman may have inflicted the injuries on herself.

Police sources revealed that the young woman ran away from her home in Nalasopara, citing an abusive family environment. Her father, a shop vendor, allegedly subjected her and her mother to physical abuse and frequently fought with her brothers.

Initially, the woman told the police she was an orphan and claimed to hail from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where she lived with her uncle. She said she had traveled to Mumbai with him on Sunday. However, further questioning revealed she fled home on Tuesday, informing her father she had found a job elsewhere.

According to the woman’s statement, she met the auto-rickshaw driver at the railway station and shared her distressing family situation and suicidal thoughts. She alleged the driver offered her sympathy and promised to take her home but instead took her to Arnala, about 12 km away, and raped her twice.

The police suspect that, terrified of returning to her abusive home, the woman inserted the objects into her body to gain sympathy from her father. They believe she may be struggling with mental health issues, which further complicates the case.

While the auto-rickshaw driver remains in custody, the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are also considering psychological evaluation and counseling for the young woman as they work to uncover the full truth behind the incident.
