Mangaluru, Feb 5: Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital marked World Cancer Day 2025 with a thought-provoking program dedicated to the theme ‘The impact of substance abuse on youth.’ The event aimed to shed light on the increasing prevalence of substance abuse among young individuals and its far-reaching consequences on physical and mental health, academic performance, relationships, and future opportunities.
The gathering witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, faculty members, students, and special guests, who collectively emphasized the need for awareness, early intervention, and preventive measures to combat substance abuse.
The event commenced with a soulful Invocation by Tufail, a second-year BNYS student, setting a reflective tone for the proceedings. This was followed by an inspiring welcome address by Ajith K, associate professor, Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital. In his address, he highlighted the significance of addressing substance abuse, particularly among youth, and encouraged students to actively engage in awareness initiatives.
The traditional Lighting of the lamp ceremony, symbolizing wisdom and enlightenment, was conducted with the participation of distinguished dignitaries, reinforcing the importance of knowledge in tackling social challenges.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr Puneet Raghavendra K R, principal of Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital, emphasized the alarming rise in substance abuse among students and young professionals. He spoke about the role of educational institutions in fostering a drug-free environment and promoting healthier lifestyle choices. His speech resonated deeply with the audience, urging them to be advocates for change.
The guest talk, the most awaited segment of the programme, was delivered by Vidya Hegde, training coordinator, Yuva Spandana Project, department of epidemiology, NIMHANS, Bengaluru. With her extensive experience in youth development and mental health awareness, she provided an in-depth analysis of how substance abuse negatively affects cognitive functions, decision-making abilities, and social behavior. She also discussed early signs of addiction, effective intervention strategies, and the role of family and society in preventing substance abuse. Her session was highly engaging, with students actively participating and raising important questions about rehabilitation and preventive strategies.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr Vajrakshi U, coordinator, CFSAP, Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Science College and Hospital. She expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, guest speakers, faculty members, and students for their active participation and commitment to making the event a success. She reiterated the importance of continuous awareness efforts to protect the youth from the dangers of substance abuse.
