Udupi, Feb 6: In a shocking incident, a bride allegedly fled with gold jewellery worth lacs just weeks after her wedding. The complainant, Denis Cardoza (64), a resident of Saligrama, Brahmavar, has filed a police complaint against his daughter-in-law regarding the theft.

According to the complaint, Denis Cardoza’s son, Anthony Dalwin Cardoza, married the first accused, Anusha, on December 26, 2023, at St Anthony Church in Sasthan. The complainant’s family was introduced to Anusha’s family through an acquaintance, Latha Mary, a resident of Udupi. After discussions, both families agreed to the marriage, and following the wedding, Anusha moved into the complainant’s residence.

On February 9, 2024, Anusha informed her husband that she needed to visit her maternal home urgently due to her mother’s (second accused Vineetha Joan) ill health. She assured him she would return in four days. The complainant’s wife, Jacintha M D Almeida, who was at work at a school in Udupi, instructed their son to give Anusha Rs 5,000 for travel expenses. Accordingly, Anthony Dalwin Cardoza dropped Anusha at the Udupi KSRTC bus stand and put her on a bus to Hassan.

Later that evening, when Jacintha returned home, she found that her cupboard had been left open. Upon inspection, she discovered that several gold ornaments were missing, including a 40-gram black bead necklace, four gold bangles weighing 10 grams each, a 24-gram gold chain, three gold rings, and a pair of gold earrings.

When the family contacted Anusha, she allegedly admitted to taking the jewellery and promised to return home to return them. However, subsequent interactions turned hostile. The other accused Vineetha Joan, Anusha’s mother, along with Lathisha and Ambrose, allegedly hurled abuses at the complainant’s family and declared that Anusha would not return. They allegedly demanded Rs 25 lac to return the stolen jewellery.

Following a private complaint filed in court, the Kota police station has registered a case, and investigations are currently underway.
