Panaji, Apr 2: A vigilant customer thwarted a suspected cheating attempt at Heera Petrol Station, opposite Kadamba Bus Terminus in Panaji, on Tuesday around 1 pm.
The incident occurred when a tourist noticed irregularities while refueling his scooter. The petrol pump attendant allegedly began filling petrol without resetting the reading to Rs 00.00, which instead displayed Rs 37.00. Despite this, the attendant charged the tourist Rs 100.
The frustrated tourist tried to warn other customers in the queue, explaining, “Petrol pump attendants often cheat by not resetting the reading. They quickly remove the filler once it hits the desired amount, making customers pay for more fuel than they actually receive.”
According to the tourist, such practices are common, with many attendants exploiting customers’ lack of attention. Complaints often go unheard as evidence is lost once the petrol is pumped.
A similar incident reportedly took place at Kantak Petrol Pump near Ferry Point in Panaji, where a customer was charged Rs 200 for what was claimed to be Rs 100 worth of petrol. Despite his protest, he lacked proof to support his claim.
Allegations suggest that attendants often exploit faulty meters or pre-adjust readings to accumulate profits. Some customers allege that company representatives or petrol pump owners may even alter settings to manipulate figures.
Cautious customers recommend purchasing petrol in odd amounts, such as Rs 175 or Rs 225, to avoid being cheated. Reports also indicate that attendants frequently refuse to sell petrol in transparent bottles, citing prohibitions, which further fuels suspicions of malpractice.
Videos on social media platforms have highlighted various tactics allegedly employed by petrol pump attendants to deceive customers. Customers are urged to stay vigilant, always check the meter before refueling, and report any suspicious activity to the concerned authorities.
