Hubballi, April 9: Expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Yatnal has been booked by the police for allegedly "promoting enmity" between communities after his controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed during an event held to celebrate Rama Navami on April 7.
The comments, which have sparked widespread outrage, were made at a public gathering where Yatnal also targeted certain sections of the Hindu community.
During his speech, Yatnal claimed that some Hindus were trying to appear "more Muslim" than the Muslims themselves, a statement which has been criticised for its divisive tone.
Following a complaint lodged by Mohammed Hannan, the Vijayapura police filed charges against Yatnal. He has been booked under various sections for promoting enmity between communities, insulting religious beliefs, and spreading false information.
In addition to his controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed, Yatnal also took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of undermining Hindu sentiments. His comments appear to be part of a broader narrative of politically charged statements aimed at polarising communities.
Yatnal, who was recently expelled from the BJP for six years over allegations of anti-party activities, expressed defiance over his expulsion, reiterating his continued loyalty to the party.
"Today, the BJP might have expelled me, but my heart beats for the BJP. Your expulsion will not work on me. The Hindu voice has grown stronger," he said during a public address. His remarks come after his severe criticism of the BJP leadership, particularly against former chief minister B S Yediyurappa and his family members, as well as the current BJP state president B Y Vijayendra.
Despite the party's decision to expel him, Yatnal remains vocal about his allegiance to the BJP, suggesting that his expulsion will not diminish his influence or his commitment to Hindu causes.
"Hindus need Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the country to stay united, for the Waqf law to be passed, and for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya," he added.
Yatnal’s controversial statements have ignited a storm of political debate, particularly in the context of Karnataka’s tense political environment. His expulsion from the BJP comes at a time of heightened political scrutiny, with his actions likely to have lasting repercussions for both the party and his personal political career.
The police action against Yatnal reflects the increasing sensitivity to inflammatory rhetoric in the state, as Karnataka heads into an important election period. Authorities have indicated that further investigation into the matter will continue.
